A new target for development of north-eastern region

Nov 22: Vision 2020 for the North Eastern States is a step ahead for the people of this region to achieve complete development.

A new enlightenment of reaching the North-Eastern states at par the developed states of the country has been generated among the people of this region. Keeping this purpose of the development of the states in mind, the North Eastern Council, Shillong have entrusted the task of preparing a draft Vision 2020 document to the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy, New Delhi based on the earlier study undertaken through nearly 40,000 respondents of NER.

The preparation of the draft Vision document is in the final stages and will be submitted for the consideration to the next meeting of the NEC, to be held on 10-11 December, 2007.

No doubt the overall development of NER has still been lower than the national average, but do not forget that pace of economic development expressed in terms of the growth of Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) varies from state to state and year to year in this state. In this context it is of great achievement for three states of Sikkim, Nagaland and Mizoram, in terms of per capita GSDP for the year of 2004-05 was more than the national average.

The major thrust sectors in NER Vision 2020 will be on transportation, agriculture, power, health, education and tourism. No doubt development is a continuous process and could not be achieved the complete development in a fixed frame of time but will be tried hard to achieve the target in the aforesaid sectors.

Development works are going on in all the important sectors. Vision-2020, as the name implies, will have a time-frame covering the 11th and 12th Five Year Plans and the first 3 years of the 13th Plan.
