The above photograph shows a rare milepost from Independent Sikkim's old transport days found alongside the National Highway 31A near Shantinagar, Singtam. Built during the British influence in Sikkim, Rangpo is 8 miles with the arrow pointed towards the left side, i.e., west direction. In contrast, the distance towards Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim, is 17 miles towards the east.
The calculation was so accurate than that even on this date, the transformation of 17 miles from Singtam to Gangtok is the same when it is converted into kilometers, i.e., 27.2km.
