Sikkim Herald- The Early Years

The history of Sikkim Herald dates back to the time of the monarchy when there were hardly any newspapers in Sikkim. A brief research was carried out by the IPR officials during the recent compilation of the Department's Achievement Report from where it is gathered that few monthly magazines were published during the erstwhile monarchy, such as Kanchenjunga by Mr. Kashiraj Pradhan, (1957), Sikkim Fortnightly by Mr. K.B. Thapa and other few publications.

With the establishment of the Publicity Department way back in the early sixties, the need to have an official news bulletin was felt by the then Sikkim Government to highlight its developmental activities in the form of a monthly news bulletin. As a result, the Sikkim Herald came into being. The first Sikkim Herald which was published in Nepali dates back to March 1959. The editorial board consisted of the following members-

1. Mr. T.S.Gyaltshen as Chairman

2. Mr. J.T. Densapa as Member

3. Mr. Mohan Pratap Pradhan as Member

4. Mr. M.M. Rasaily as Member

Mr. C.D. Rai was the editor of the first Sikkim Herald.

With time, Sikkim Herald evolved gradually, the name of the Publicity Department changed to the Directorate of Information Services and again the Press and Publicity Department during the seventies. Subsequently, with the merger of Sikkim with the Indian Union in 1975, and keeping with the directives of the Government of India, the Department was renamed as Information and Public Relations Department in 1978.

The growing workload and requirements of the time necessitated. the restructuring of the department. The Government invited Mr. M. V. Desai, the then Director of the Indian Institute of Mass Communication, New Delhi to report on the information task in Sikkim in 1977. Based on this report, different sections like Publication, Advertising, Visual Publicity, District Information Centers, Film and Photo division were established. Thus, the department fully took on the new challenges taking in its ambit, manpower training, up-gradation of its technical equipment etc. Gradually, over the years, the Sikkim Herald began to be published as a weekly in 1963 during the tenure of Mr. N.K. Rustomji who was the then Dewan of Sikkim. Later, Sikkim Herald came out in the form of a newspaper which was cyclostated. With time Sikkim Herald was published in Tibetan and then subsequently in Lepcha language. The Nepali and Tibetan editions of the Sikkim Herald used to be brought out regularly. The first Sikkim Herald in Nepali dates back to March 1959. The departmental team even came across a handwritten Sikkim Herald that was published in Nepali in 1967.

Till 2014, the Sikkim Herald was published in 12 languages i.e Nepali-1959, Tibetan-1968, Lepcha-1977, Limboo-1989, Bhutia-1997, Newari-2000, Gurung-2001, Sherpa-2001, Tamang-2001, Rai-2001, Mangar-2002 and Mukhia-2004. After May 2011, Sikkim Herald English and Nepali editions were brought in colour.

Snow Lions: Guardians of Buddhist Tradition

Snow lion paintings and sculptures, featuring a white body with a mane and tail colored in green or blue, have captivated me since childhood. Considered one of the four celestial animals in Buddhist culture, the snow lion adorns flags, coins, and stamps in Tibet. The other three celestial creatures—Garuda, Dragon, and Tiger—are collectively known as the Four Dignities.

Simick Monastery, Khamdong

The snow lion, also called Seng, embodies vitality, dignity, lightness, and purity. Mythical animal sculptures often grace the entrances of monasteries, depicting these creatures as protectors guarding sacred spaces. Although the earliest mention of this animal dates back to Wu Cheng'en's book 'Journey to the West' published in 1592 during the Ming dynasty, where it was represented by Yokai, a supernatural entity, the snow lion's significance in Tibetan culture predates this reference.

Phodang Monastery

Introduced by Chador Namgyal, the third Chogyal of Sikkim, the tradition of the snow lion dance, also known as Singhi Chaam, persists to this day. This dance, performed during various festivals, pays homage to the mighty Kanchenjunga, the prominent deity in this region. Male dancers, adorned in masks and elaborate attire, beautifully portray this mystical dance. Today, diverse cultures attribute variations of the snow lion dance across Buddhist traditions.

As we approached the lake, the lush greenery enveloping it instantly caught my eye. The tranquil waters mirrored the verdant hills, creating a mesmerizing reflection that seemed to stretch on forever. The gentle breeze whispered through the leaves, adding to the serene atmosphere that permeates this idyllic spot. It's no wonder that Seeh Lake is often referred to as a hidden gem in the Lower Subansiri district.

The project has not only created a serene retreat for visitors but has also contributed to the sustainable management of water resources in the region.

Boating Experience:

Given the time constraints of our visit, we opted for a motorboat ride to explore the lake. The gentle hum of the engine provided a soothing backdrop as we glided across the clear waters. The boat afforded us a unique perspective, allowing us to fully appreciate the beauty of the surroundings from the heart of the lake. For those seeking a more hands-on experience, paddle boats are also available, offering a leisurely way to soak in the tranquil ambience.

Ganga Lake : My Arunachal Pradesh Diary

Ganga Lake, also known as Geykar Sinyi, is a beautiful natural lake located 6 kilometres from Itanagar. The name Ganga Lake could be due to the popular Ganga Market nearby.

Boating at Ganga Lake offers a chance to appreciate the natural beauty of the surroundings, observe the diverse flora and fauna, and soak in the peaceful ambience. It provides an opportunity to connect with nature and spend quality time with loved ones. I could see Suni and Suyog enjoying the moment, but I had to stop Suyog several times not to play with water. His play reminded me of my childhood boating experience at Mirik with my mother.

The lake is one of the popular tourist attractions in Itanagar. It is known for its picturesque views and tranquil atmosphere. The lake is a must-visit destination for nature lovers and those seeking peace and serenity. The lake is an enclosed water body locally called Geyker Sinyik in the Nyishi dialect, and the nearby vegetation makes it green.

There are two types of boat rentals available. A two-seater boat can be rented for a duration of half an hour at a cost of INR 150. A four-seater boat, which can accommodate more people, is available for rent for the same duration at a cost of INR 250, and we settled for it.

These boat rides offer visitors the opportunity to explore the serene beauty of Ganga Lake while enjoying a peaceful time on the water. A little later our Sonam Sir’s family joined us at the boating and we clicked each other at the Lake.

The lake has an interesting story behind its creation. It was first discovered by a person named Tai Bida. According to the legend, Tai Bida went to search for his lost mithuns, a type of domesticated cattle and now the state animal of Arunachal Pradesh. While searching for his mithuns, Tai Bida stumbled upon this serene lake surrounded by lush greenery and lofty mountains.

Ganga Lake is believed to be blessed by the goddess Ganga. However, there are also stories that suggest that the lake was named after the nearby Ganga Market. Boating at this serene lake offers a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life, providing visitors with the opportunity to appreciate the natural beauty of the surroundings and connect with nature.

The lake is a popular tourist attraction and a must-visit destination for nature lovers and those seeking peace and tranquillity. While exploring the lush greenery and lofty mountains surrounding the lake, visitors might wonder about the story behind the lake's name and the true reason behind its creation.

Itanagar Gompa : My Arunachal Pradesh Diary

Itanagar Gompa (Thupten Gatsaling Monastery, Siddharth Vihar) was one of the places we had heard of when we checked the popular tourist spots in and around Itanagar.

After wrapping up our visits to Ganga Lake and Itanagar Zoo, we arrived at the Gompa in the dusk - a place of great spiritual significance. This beautiful monastery, built in 1974, showcases the teachings of Tibetan Buddhism and the rich culture of the region with its vibrant colours and intricate design.

Getting there was a scenic adventure with my wife Suni and son Suyog. The nearest Naharlagun Railway Station is just 5 kilometers away, and if you're flying in, Lilabari Airport in Assam is the closest, at about 67 kilometers away.

Stepping into the Gompa, I was immediately struck by the peaceful atmosphere. The prayer hall, adorned with lovely paintings, provided the perfect space for quiet reflection.

During my visit, I had the pleasure of sharing this experience with Sonam Sir's family - Sonam Sir, Sakun Madam, their son Aaden, and Dewa. Together, we participated in prayers and celebrated cultural events.

The Gompa also offers stunning views of Itanagar city and the Himalayan peaks. Perched on a hill, it's a perfect spot to soak in the natural beauty and find peace. The Buddha statue at the center exudes a sense of calm and compassion.

My visit to Itanagar Gompa was more than just a journey; it was a deeply spiritual experience. It reminded me of the importance of finding serenity in our busy lives. This sacred site holds a special place for anyone seeking a moment of quiet reflection and a glimpse into the teachings of Tibetan Buddhism.
