Sikkim's First Governor Sworn In

FIFTY-EIGHT-YEAR-OLD MR. BEPIN BEHARI LAL, I.C.S., TOOK OATH AS FIRST GOVERNOR OF SIKKIM AT A SIMPLE BUT IMPRESSIVE CEREMONY HELD AT RAJBHAVAN ON MAY 16. THE OATH WAS ADMINISTERED BY MR JUSTICE RAJINDER SACHAR, CHIEF JUSTICE OF THE HIGH COURT OF SIKKIM. The function was held at a specially erected pandal at the Rajbhavan lawns and was attended, among others by Chief Minister Kazi Lhendup Dorji, Kazini of Chakung, members ofthe  Cabinet Mr B.P. Dahal, Mr B.P. Kharel, Mr Dorji Tsering, Mr Naye Tsering Lepcha, and Mr Rinzing Tongden Lepcha, Deputy Speaker of Sikkim Assembly Mr C.S. Rai, Members of the Sikkim Legislative Assembly, General Secretary of Congress Party Mr S.K. Rai, and top civil and army officials. Later, Mr Lal administered he oath of office and secrecy to Kazi as Chief Minister and his Cabinet colleagues under the Indian Constitution. Singtam Heritage Post Box and its story

I was part of a beautiful concept brought by Roshan Prasad, our popular philatelist from Singtam, to re-install a neglected Post Box near the old post office building in the heart of the bazaar. In one of its kind event, we, the members of the Sikkim Philatelic and Numismatic Society , added a page to the map of the world's postal history when we removed the neglected post-box given new colours and had its permanent installation near the Water Fountain as a Heritage Post Box. An earlier Sikkim postal cancellation mark, along with the establishment of a Post Office in Singtam in 1903, was written on the stone slab below the base of the postbox. CHATUR SINGH RAI: FIRST SPEAKER OF SIKKIM LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY

Chatur Singh Rai First Speaker of Sikkim Legislative Assembly Late Chatur Singh Rai was born on May 22, 1909, and completed his education at Darjeeling. He was the second son of the late Krishna Kumar Rai, who was serving as Assistant Superintendent with the Government of India, later known as the Political Office in Sikkim. Mr. Rai joined the then British Government and thereafter joined the service of the Government of Sikkim from September 1929 to October 1965 as an Executive Officer in departments like works, press, education, and others. During his service tenure, he was awarded various Certificates of Honour in recognition of his contributions and meritorious service by the Government of Sikkim. He was nominated as the Sikkim Census Officer in 1940-41, 1950-51, and 1960-61. He was the President of the Sikkim Census Silver Medals on all occasions.
