Speech and Quiz Competition for Water Day celebration





Dalapchand, March 23: Generous Student Dalapchand Secondary School, a student forum of Dalapchand SS in association with Badhaichha Creation, Singtam observed the World Water Day at the school premises yesterday. Two hour short program had Inter-House Speech and Quiz Competition related to water topics. Present on the occasion was ST Bhutia, Headmaster of the school, his staff and Praveen Pradhan, Managing Director of Badhaichha Creation.  Prizes for the story writing competition organized by Red Ribbon Club Spark NGO, Singtam were also distributed.  
Prakash Poudhyal, CRC Coordinator and teacher of the school was the host of the day while Sonam Dorjee Bhutia, GT (Bio) was the Quiz Master. Speaking on the occasion, ST Bhutia, Headmaster of the Dalapchand SS informed the gathered students about the significance of the day and told them to hold the importance of water for all form of life.
Speech Competition was won by Reenu Chettri of Nobile Orchid House while the Quiz competition was won by Blood Pheasant House. The five members of the Blood Pheasant House were Bipen Pradhan, Sudeep Chamling, Samir Rai, Rajnee Rai and Prerna Gurung. The prizes were jointly sponsored by Generous Student Dalapchand Secondary School and Badhaichha Creation.
Story writing competition on AIDS was won by Prerna Pradhan followed by Reenu Chettri while Prem Kala Gurung and Prava Sharma were jointly announced third. The prizes were handed over by ST Bhutia and Praveen Pradhan.
Praveen Pradhan, Chief Guest on the occasion thanked the Headmaster and school staff for letting him gets involved at school function. Pradhan told the student that wining and loosing is a different matter, the most important thing is participating in an event and he was very happy to come across many talents on the day.

Sikkim Mahinda Thero: A national hero of Sri Lanka

Sikkim Mahinda Thero BY SHITAL PRADHAN I first heard about S Mahinda Thero in 2005 while in Kolkata when I was asked by one of the stamp dealers whether I was interested in a 20 paisa stamp of S Mahinda Thero issued by the Sri Lankan Postal Department in the early 1970s. I collected philatelic items on Buddhism, but I never understood who he was talking about. He told me, as I was from Sikkim, I might be interested to know more about the person, and he went on to add it was Sikkim Mahinda Thero, a Buddhist monk who is regarded as a national hero, a famous poet in the Sinhalese language whose poetry promoted patriotism and the revival of Buddhism to this part of the Island. He promised to send me the stamp of S Mahinda Thero from Colombo through the mail, but I have never heard from him since then.
