Gorkha Bharati Vichar Manch Launched in Siliguri

Siliguri,24th June: The concept of Gorkha Bharati Vichar Manch was formally launched at an event organized at Hotel Royal Sarovar in Siliguri on June 24, 2012. The function was attended by well-known dignitaries from various North East states as well as from Sikkim and North Bengal region. The convener for the event was Mr. Krishna Bhujel from Guwahati and Dr. BR Chettri, an eminent educationist from Kalimpong, was present as the Guest of Honour.

Gorkha Bharati Vichar Manch is conceptualized to work towards raising awareness on the identity issue of the Indian Gorkhas which has had a long history of being misinterpreted and misrepresented. The Vichar Manch is of the opinion that the Indian National History has to be written in a correct perspective so that minority communities like Gorkhas do not get sidelined and marginalized from the country’s mainstream. It is because of this incorrect history or rather the incorrect interpretation of history that communities like the Gorkhas are faced with the dilemma of always having to prove their national identity.  Rewriting history from the correct perspective, and wide dissemination of the same is, therefore, one of the main objectives of this Vichar Manch.

Vichar Manch seeks to work in a manner that advocates for establishing leadership of thought (VICHAR), denouncing the age-old concept of personal leadership. The power of thought, therefore, is what will guide and lead the whole movement giving it the required focus. Vichar Manch also firmly believes that in a huge multicultural federal democracy like India, a minority community like Gorkha must establish a relationship with the nation which is cordial, and bereft of any doubt whatsoever. The establishment of this relationship will then pave way for the nation to give due cognizance to the problems of the Gorkhas, and take measures under the prevailing constitutional provisions.

A book titled THE NATIONAL IDENTITY CRISIS OF THE INDIAN GORKHAS AND THE CONCEPT OF GORKHA BHARATI VICHAR MANCH was written by Mr. CK. Shrestha, a social thinker and theatre activist, was also released today along with a documentary film presentation, which aptly authenticated the views raised by the vichar manch.

Dalda 13’s flashes of Dalai Lama at Sikkim

Homai Vyarawalla, India’s first woman press photographer claimed to fame was her photographs that showed a transition of an Independent India in the first four decades. A winner of Padma Vibhusan, the second-highest civilian award of India, Homai Vyarawalla was an active press photographer from the 30s till the 70s when she finally retired She started her career from Bombay Chronicle and ended it with  The illustrated weekly of India. She passed away early this year at the age of 98.

Some of her poplar photographs included the celebration of the first Independence Day, Nehru lighting a cigarette on the lips of Ms. Simon, wife of the then British High Commissioner to India, funerals of great leaders in Gandhiji, Nehru, and others.

Interestingly it is written in Wikipedia that most of her photographs were published under the pseudonym “Dalda 13″. The reasons behind her choice of this rather amusing name were that her birth year was 1913, she got married at the age of 13 and her first car’s number plate read “DLD 13″.
In 1970, shortly after her husband's death, Homai Vyarawalla decided to give up photography lamenting over the "bad behavior" of the new generation of photographers. She did not take a single photograph in the last 40-plus years of her life. When asked why she quit photography while at the peak of her profession, she said.

"It was not worth it anymore. We had rules for photographers; we even followed a dress code. We treated each other with respect, like colleagues. But then, things changed for the worst. They [the new generation of photographers] were only interested in making a few quick bucks; I didn't want to be part of the crowd anymore.”

It was on her assignment on the visit of Dalai Lama to India in 1956, she was in Sikkim. It was a historic visit for Dalai Lama since a first instance and more evidently three years later he was forced to flee his country. He was in India to attend the Buddhist Conference.  Reports say that Homai Vyarawalla was stranded in Sikkim when had taken photographed of the young Dalai Lama and later on helped by the army trucks.

When asked about the most precious photo of her illustrious career she had said that it was the photographs where Dalai Lama is seen coming to India for the very first time shot in Sikkim.

Below are some of the photographs she took of the young Dalai Lama crossing the frontier of Nathula in 1956:

The Dalai Lama in ceremonial dress leads the mount down from the high border pass into India. Directly behind him is the Panchen Lama. They were both wearing gold brocade gowns and jeweled gold hats. Homai documented for Time-Life magazine, the first crossing of the young Dalai Lama who came through the Nathu La pass, in north Sikkim, in 1956.

Singtam guy scores a perfect hundred at Mathematics at CBSE Class XII Examination

When this year CBSE Class XII results was announced i was wondering about an outcome of a guy from Singtam studying at East Point Senior Secondary School then who had scored a "Perfect Ten" during his Class X Board Examination. I still remember his shy face and i had even carried his article in handful of daily newspapers then. The boy was Navin Kumar Triwedi.
Today i came across this guy at Singtam and i was very keen to know about his examination result as such that i enquired about it. Navin with his smile said, it was good and he went on to add he had scored 100 in mathematics. I was very happy to hear about his success. He told me he was studying at Holy Cross, Tadong. Since i was in hurry so just took his mobile number and disappeared from him.
Late evening i asked his 'Roll Number' to look at his result on internet and more then him, i was very happy to see his marks. I believe everyone would be proud of him, after his result.

Great Going Navin !.....next time too whenever you complete your any examination, i will be the one eagerly waiting to hear your outcome..........
