Three boxing bronze medals for Sikkim at Indore National Rural Sports Competition



SINGTAM, JANUARY 7: Taran Pradhan from Bardang has won a bronze medal in 56 kg at boxing event at recently held National Rural Sports Competition Group V at Indore, Madhya Pradesh.  The competition held from December 27 – 30 was organised by Mission Directorate – Rajiv Gandhi Khel Abhiyan, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Government of India.
Taran Pradhan has thanked Pritam Shilal, his boxing coach for his triumph. He further thanked the state government for providing the platform and opportunity to showcase his skills.   Pradhan was among 10 boxers from Sikkim who was selected to represent the state after his successful stint at Rajiv Gandhi Khel Abhiyan selections held at different parts of Sikkim. Sikkim boxers went on to win three bronze medals in the competition. Other bronze medalists from Sikkim were Kalpana Subba from Mangshila and Mausam Rai from Namchi. There were six boys and four girls in the boxing events from Sikkim.
Pritam Shilal said, he is happy with the success of Taran Pradhan and is sure that his student will improve his medal tally in the coming tournaments. Shilal, boxing coach of Singtam Boxing Club in his early twenties had been two times bronze medalists at National Sub Junior Championship but his fatal knee ligament injury during India Camp in 2009 ended his promising career. Since then for the last two and half year, he had been training the young boys and girls into boxing.

Sikkim Mahinda Thero: A national hero of Sri Lanka

Sikkim Mahinda Thero BY SHITAL PRADHAN I first heard about S Mahinda Thero in 2005 while in Kolkata when I was asked by one of the stamp dealers whether I was interested in a 20 paisa stamp of S Mahinda Thero issued by the Sri Lankan Postal Department in the early 1970s. I collected philatelic items on Buddhism, but I never understood who he was talking about. He told me, as I was from Sikkim, I might be interested to know more about the person, and he went on to add it was Sikkim Mahinda Thero, a Buddhist monk who is regarded as a national hero, a famous poet in the Sinhalese language whose poetry promoted patriotism and the revival of Buddhism to this part of the Island. He promised to send me the stamp of S Mahinda Thero from Colombo through the mail, but I have never heard from him since then. Snake like fish caught in Singtam River

The  Indian mottled eel,  locally known as Raj Bam,   was recovered from the Singtam River at Golitar this early morning.  The snake-like fish weighed around 7 kg and was four feet long. The local people said that they had never seen this species for so long. Such mysterious-looking marine fish are also sighted from time to time on the river banks, local people added.
