In less than 24 hours of the SIKKIM EXPRESS’s CITIZEN REPORTER report on the deplorable condition of the newly constructed Kanchendongza Shopping Plaza or the Lall Bazaar here, the Urban Housing and Housing Department sprung into action and started to clear the complex of all the filth and garbage. Yesterday’s (May 23) issue of SIKKIM EXPRESS’s CITIZEN REPORTER had brought of light the accumulated garbage in the complex and the health hazards faced by the residents of the area. The prompt action by the Department is appreciated and this was possible only because of the CITIZEN REPORTER initiative. We only wish that the administration was as quick to respond to other problems faced by the people of Sikkim.

NAMCHI, May 24: A free personality evolution and career counseling was held at Namchi on 19 May, by the Air Hostess Academy (AHA) Siliguri wherein around 100 students appeared and underwent the counseling. Among the participants 40 students were selected for whom a presentation class was held the next day on 20 May. The entire programme of counseling, personality evolution till the presentation classes were conducted at hotel Samdruptse, Namchi. A team of four staffs came from AHA Siliguri for the purpose, comprising the Training Coordinatior Srijana Kumai, Director Vikash Singhal, Orientator Deepshika Sharma and Business Development Executive Sabrina Moktan. Landslide strands tourists in Sikkim Statesman News Service GANGTOK, May 24: Landslides triggered by heavy rainfall over the past four days made things difficult for tourists at Bitu in North Sikkim today. The road that connects Gangtok to North Sikkim was closed yesterday due to a landslide at Pangthang. Vehicles, however, reached Gangtok using Rakdong-Tintek route. Tourists and government employees were stranded at Bitu today due to the landslide. Landslides have also been reported on the road between Pelling and Yoksum in West Sikkim. The road was closed for traffic for the whole day yesterday, leaving the vehicles carrying tourists with no other option but to use the longer route ~ Legship and Geyzing ~ to reach their destinations. In Gangtok, a minor landslide was occurred at Sichey and Burtuk today.

GANGTOK, May 23: The Journalist fraternity of Sikkim have welcomed the constitution of a Wage Board for Working Journalists by the Centre. Welcoming the announcement, working journalists from Sikkim have expressed their happiness over the Wage Board, saying that it will mean at least a decent salary to them. Commenting on this development, veteran journalist and President, Press Club of Sikkim, CD Rai said that this was long overdue. Welcoming Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh’s approval, Mr. Rai said that this will ensure that every working journalist in Sikkim will get equal pay and this will end the great pay disparity prevalent in many media organisations in the State. “The Wage Boards should act quickly so that all working journalists benefit from them,” he said. Ranipool, Arithang, Upper Tadong, Tashi viewpoint, Pangthang, Penlong, Nabey Sotak, Burtuk, Chanmari embraced under Gangtok Municipal Corporation GANGTOK May 23: The Municipality demarcation for the up-coming Panchayat election, likely to be held this October, has been notified. As per the latest notification, 10 Gram Panchayat Units has been incorporated in the Municipal Corporation. Gangtok has been identified as the only Municipal Corporation in the state as per the guidelines with its population above 70,000. The demarcation shows Ranipool, Arithang, Upper Tadong, Tashi viewpoint, Pangthang, Penlong, Nabey Sotak, Burtuk, Chanmari under Gangtok Municipal Corporation. Altogether six-gram Panchayat units in and around Gangtok have been incorporated to Gangtok Municipal Corporation (GMC). Sikkim Sangram Parishad celebrated its 14th anniversary at Gangtok on May 24, 2007. The celebration was presided over by its president Rajendra Upreti. The party passed the five resolutions which included the support to independent candidates in the forthcoming panchayat elections maintaining its previous stance not to politicize the Panchayati raj institution, curbing the increasing influx in Sikkim under the provision of 371(F) by passing legislation. The party has suggested the government to give special impetus for agriculture and put an end for endless construction of houses and building elsewhere for commercial purposes. Impossibility is really found in the dictionary of fools: Zeeshan Ali Anshari NAMCHI, May 23: Zeeshan Ali Anshari of Namchi Public School proved that Mathematics is not a tough subject, scoring 100 out of 100 in ISC examination the result of which was declared recently. Eighteen years of Anshari appeared in ISC examination with PCM (Science) from Namchi Public School. Anshari scored overall 83% ranking 2nd in the school. However he is the only one who secured the maximum percentage leaving behind all other students appearing in Science stream in ISC examination this year.
