Mahendra P. Lama hasn’t yet been appointed as VC

Gangtok, 20 June: Though Mahendra P. Lama has been appointed as the vice-chancellor of Sikkim Central University in principal yet he hasn’t been appointed officially, this has been disclosed by the Human Resource Development Minister, G.M.Gurung.

Minister Gurung speaking to the Mail, said that for being vice-chancellor there need so many official formalities, such as the body would be made in the University to recommend Vice-chancellor officially besides the union government again should intimate to the body for the appointment of V.C. “Actually, the President under the recommendation of Union Government has only recommended Mahendra P. Lama not appointed.” Gurung clarified.

Speaking on the location of the University, Gurung said the government had at first thought of Timi Tarku, but there didn’t become feasible because there was short of land. “For the university, there needs more than 250 Acre for its but at Timi Tarku the land is less than 200 acres,” he said.

It should be mentioned a fact-finding team from the Centre had already visited the different places of Sikkim for the suitable location of the university. He further said, there is a possibility at YangYang but yet that hasn’t been finalized. The government also is thinking to run the university at Sikkim Government College by making some modifications. However, through the statement of the Minister the government hasn’t arrived at any decision to make the university where?

We are trying our level best to arrive at a decision after consulting with the University Grant Commission and the Union Government, Minister Gurung said.

Mahendra P. Lama, who now teaches at Jawaharlal Nehru University, the premier university of Asia, as the professor of Economics Department, would be the youngest vice-chancellor of India after his appointment at Sikkim Central University. In 2000, he joined JNU as an associate professor. He is also the economic advisor of the Chief Minister.

    Firstly, please check the use of 'level best' among the smaller errors in the article. It's incorrect. Secondly, Prof. Lama did/does not teach in the Department of Economics. He's the Chairperson at School of international Studies, Centre for South Asian Studies. Thirdly, we at the university are confirmed that he's got the appointment as he's already made future arrangements.

LENDUP DORJEE KHANGSARPA : The First Chief Minister of Sikkim (1975-1979)

Popularly known as L. D. Kazi, became the first Chief Minister of Sikkim in 1975 thus ending over three century old monarchy system. He became the 1st Chief Minister of Sikkim on 14 MAY, 1975 - 17 AUGUST, 1979. He was born in 1904 in Pakyong, East District. A fonuder President of Sikkim Praja Mandal, established in 1946. Later he became the President of Sikkim State Congress and held the post till 1958. In 4th general election held in 1970, Kazi was appointed an Executive Councilor and was assigned the portfolio of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry and Transport Authority. Under his presidency in 1973, the united party secured 31 out of 32 seats of State Assembly and became the first Chief Minister of Sikkim in 1974. He was married to Elisa-Maria Standford in 1968, daughter of a Belgian father and German mother who left her Scottish husband in Burma and married LD Kaji in Delhi in 1957.
