April 4 1965: Coronation of the last (King) Chogyal of Sikkim

Today is the 44th anniversary of the coronation of Chogyal Palden Thondup Namgyal, the last Chogyal of Sikkim. His marriage with Hope Cooke, an American gave Sikkim a world wide attention and it was for the first time on his coronation the gates for the western world was opened to Sikkim.

    This is something that i have always soughted for....looking at these pictures and reading the speech take me back to those times ..whn we could proudly proclam..yes we are a country..we have a king..we are proud of it..vested interest of some handful of people and eccentrics..have made us lose everythng..Calling them father of democracy...i would rather term them as murderers of royal family of sikkim

This was a national song of Sikkim sung in the Nepali language during the monarchy system. During the merger with India, the song got banned and later re-released. Two words on the 8th para, which earlier said 'Rajah rah Rani,' were replaced with "Janmah bhumi."     This song was dedicated to the King and Queen of Sikkim. Extracted from Pakistan Defence India’s “Chief Executive” in Gangtok wrote: “Sikkim’s merger was necessary for Indian national interest. And we worked to that end. Maybe if the Chogyal had been smarter and played his cards better, it wouldn’t have turned out the way it did.” It is also said that the real battle was not between the Chogyal and Kazi Lendup Dorji but between their wives. Never in the pages of a history book do we come across its talk about when it was built or how it was constructed at the top of the hill?
