Kancha lay kanchi lai lagyo....a song in Hindi classic Madhumati (1957)

Today I will talk about an old 1957 Hindi Classic film Madhumati, directed by Bimal Roy, a legend of  Indian cinema.  This black and white film had Dilip Kumar, Vijayanthimala, Johnny Walker, Pran, and Jayant in the lead role and is regarded as one of the milestones in Hindi cinema. I have seen this movie on television a couple of times and enjoyed it. The idea of this film has over the decades inspired many other hit films including Rishi Kapoor's Karz and Shah Rukh Khan's Om Shanti Om.

The exciting part of the movie for me is not the acting skills of the great actors assembled nor the story that had been long talked about but one song that stayed with me in my mind for a long time. So far it is well and fine but the thing i want people to go through is one of the songs that has stayed with me for a long time. The song says " Kancha le Kanchi lai  lagyo" sung by the great Asha Bhosle, Sabita Chowdhury, and Ghulam Mohammad. The music of the song is given by the maestro Salil Chaudary and penned by Sailendra. It is a folk song and is picturized in a dance sequence in the mela scene in the movie.

Interestingly the first half of the song resembles an old Nepali folk song that used to be sung at the Makar Sakranti at Triveni Mela, Melli at the meeting point of the River Teesta and River Rangit. The song says "Kancha lay kanchi lai lagyo, mann ko baatoa laltinnai balerah".

The song lyrics were penned by Sanu Lama, and the music was composed by Dushyant Lama.  The song was first sung on the birth anniversary of Chogyal Palden Thondup Namgyal on April 4, 1970, at Gangtok by Aruna Lama, Dawa Lama, and Manikamal Chettri.    JANHA BAGCHA TEESTA RANGIT,  JAHAN KANCHENDZONGA SEER   YEHI HO HAMRO DHANA KO DESH,  TAPAWAN HO PYARO SIKKIM     INTERLUDE     PHULCHAN YEHA AANGANAI MAA,  CHAAP , GURAS, SUNAKHARI   SWARGASARI SUNDAR DESH KO  HAMRO PYARO PYARO JANMAHBHUMI     JANHA BAGCHA……     BATASHLE BOKCHAA YAHA,  TATHAGAT KO AAMAR WAANI ...

Except for Army and GREF all other Vehicles, as well as shops, were closed. Such a state bandh was last held ten years back. (photographs from Singtam)

Snake like fish caught in Singtam River

The  Indian mottled eel,  locally known as Raj Bam,   was recovered from the Singtam River at Golitar this early morning.  The snake-like fish weighed around 7 kg and was four feet long. The local people said that they had never seen this species for so long. Such mysterious-looking marine fish are also sighted from time to time on the river banks, local people added.
