GANGTOK February 16: The first Lok Sabha member from Sikkim, SK Rai passed away today morning at his residence here at 6th Mile, Tadong after a prolonged illness.
Rai was a member of the Parliament from 1975 to 1979 from the Sikkim Congress Party under the LD Kazi government.
A condolence meeting was held at the SDF party office here at Indira Bypass chaired by party vice-president KB Chamling to condole the death of Rai, a distinguished personality in the Sikkimese society and an important member of the ruling front. The meeting also deliberated on the life of late Rai and his contributions to the Sikkimese society.
The party extended its deep condolences to the bereaved family and held a two minute silence to mourn the passing away of Rai, a SDF press release states.
Late SK Rai was a strong proponent of democracy, the SDF party said. The party recollected that Rai was one of the signatories of the 8th May agreement.
