Singtam Boxing Club enjoys success at State Level Boxing championship




SINGTAM, MAY 3: Singtam Boxing Club, a three year old boxing club had a dream run at the recently concluded 14th State Level Boxing championship that was held at Sonamati Memorial Government SSS, Khamdong. The boxers from SBC went on to win Sub-Junior Girls Championship while they stood second at the Sub-Junior Boys Championship.
Pritam Shilal, coach of Singtam Boxing Club has said his young boxers went on to win 17 medals that included six gold, four silver and seven bronze medals. It was a great achievement that Pratik Chettri and Kumari Sanyasi, my students were adjudged Best Boxer of the tournament in boys and girls category, added the proud coach. Shilal further added, his success does not stop here. My next goal would be to produce winners from those who missed gold medals this time. Nevertheless I am happy that their efforts and hard work are paying off, said Shilal.
Shilal is the former two times bronze medalists at National Sub Junior Championship but his fatal knee ligament injury during India Camp in 2009 ended his promising career. Since then for the last three years, he had been training the young boys and girls into boxing.
Sunny Kr. Bhagat, the team captain of Singtam Boxing Club who won the gold in 63 kg category said, he owes his success to his coach and his family. I am also thankful towards my school, Government Secondary School Singtam for supporting me. I am happy that last year I had won bronze and this time it is gold. There were 198 boxers from different parts of the state in the competition and I feel that Sikkim has a bright future ahead in this sport, Sunny added.
The medalist from Singtam Boxing Club were : Gold: Nisha  Subba, Kumari Sanyasi, Sunaina Bardewa, Pratil Chettri, Anand Chettri, Sunny Kr. Bhagat; Silver: Taran Pradhan, Madan Rai, Laxuman Rai, Som Maya Subba; Bronze: Ravi Darjee, Bikash Lal Pandit, Sradha Rai, Sushma Tamang, Anuka Rai, Prayash Rai, Pawan Singh Darnal

Sikkim closes for a day in support of their CM

A 12-hour bandh call by the supporters of the ruling SDF party was observed today. The bandh was called to protest the burning of Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling's effigy by the Shiv Sena activists on the 11th of September in Siliguri, West Bengal charging CM Chamling with having 'dual nationality. Except for Army and GREF all other Vehicles, as well as shops, were closed. Such a state bandh was last held ten years back. (photographs from Singtam)

Snake like fish caught in Singtam River

The  Indian mottled eel,  locally known as Raj Bam,   was recovered from the Singtam River at Golitar this early morning.  The snake-like fish weighed around 7 kg and was four feet long. The local people said that they had never seen this species for so long. Such mysterious-looking marine fish are also sighted from time to time on the river banks, local people added.
