PSS completes a year; celebrates with free basic photography workshop


SINGTAM, DECEMBER 25: On the occasion of the first anniversary of the Photographic Society of Sikkim (Singtam), a one-day free basic photography workshop was conducted at Kidzee School, Singtam. Eighteen participants from nearby places of Singtam and beyond had participated. Those included places like Gangtok, Samdong, Rhenock, Kingstone, Ranipool, Singtam, Sang Khola, and others. The cake-cutting celebration was also held on the day

The photography workshop had two sessions; indoor and outdoor. The indoor session had talks and discussions on three topics viz. Basics of Photography, Brief Introduction on Camera Insights and Night-Photography by Ujjwal Darjee, Sanket Agarwal, and Roshan Rai respectively, all members of PSS. Outdoor photo-shoot was held at the famed Rani-Khola river-side walkway and the premises of Kidzee School.

Shital Pradhan, Publicity In-charge, PSS was the host of the day while Milan Sharma, President, PSS spoke about the activities performed by the society over the last year. Sharma added that it was on the occasion of the anniversary, the society thought about conducting the free – workshop. He further thanked the participants for making the workshop a success.

The certificate was distributed among the participants towards the end of the program by Sishir Chettri, Advisor of PSS, and Ashok Prasad, Joint Secretary, PSS. The workshop was valuable and lots of knowledge was learned echoed the participants.

National Consumer Day 2016 celebrated at Himalayan Pharmacy Institute

National Consumer Day was celebrated at Himalayan Pharmacy Institute, Mazhitar by Federation of Consumers Association of Sikkim today. Tilu Gurung, MLA Namthang Ratheypani and Gopal Baraily, MLA West Pandam was the Chief Guest and the Guest of honour of the day.
Shri Sandeep Chettri , President Majhitar Educated Unemployed Youth Cooperative Society was conferred with Concerned Consumer Award 2016 for his initiative on creating awareness among the public in the issues of Domestic Liquefied Petroleum Gas, Water & in many more.

Riverine Elementary School, Rongli celebrates 5th annual day

SINGTAM, DECEMBER 13: Riverine Elementary School, Melatar, Rongli celebrated its 5th annual day with joy and enthusiasm.  TT Bhutia, Joint Director, HRDD, Gangtok was the chief guest on the occasion while other distinguished guests included KN Pradhan, AEO Regu BAC,  Ganesh Chettri, Headmaster Rongli JHS, members of SMC, guardians and others. 
Highlight of the day was the prize distribution to the students that have excelled on different fields, inter-community cultural ramp show by students and skit of save earth. Khusi Gurung, student of class vi was the host of the day.
The day long program started with the welcome speech by Karabi Mondal, teacher of the school. Thereafter, Bikki Rai, Principal of the school read out the annual report of the school. Rai informed the gathered crowd the participation of the school on different activities. Indira Darnal, teacher of the school narrated the future plans for the next session among the guardians. Introduction of abacus and other innovative methods of teaching was informed that would help the students on maths. 
Cultural dance was the other highlight of the day. The skit of Save Earth by the students from class UKG till class v was highly appreciated by everyone. The students dressed as trees, flowers, different animals, water had a major impact on the audience.
Speaking on the occasion, TT Bhutia, Joint Director, HRDD, Gangtok praised the efforts of the school in participating at different events over the year and organizing regular teacher- guardian meetings. He spoked about the abacus and encouraged the school staff and the guardian to accept the need of hour. He suggested the school to come up with science club. He further congratulated the school owners, Santosh Pradhan and Sushen Pradhan for providing wonderful environment for the students.

KN Pradhan, AEO, Regu BAC highly appreciated the effort of ‘student host’ in conducting the program in English language. He congratulated the entire team of the school for the beautiful and successful program. Other people to speak on the occasion included Ganesh Chettri, Headmaster Rongli JHS and Bhim Pradhan, SMC member of the school.
Parent amusement program was also organised for the guardians. Dress code for the guardian was announced and the winner of the Most Attractive Male and Female of the day was selected. Prizes were distributed to the students by the Chief Guest and the other distinguished guests. Khusi Gurung, student of class vi was adjudged the student of the year for her all round performance. Prabha Gurung, teacher of the school gave the vote of thanks.

Sikkim's Sushmita Rai wins bronze at World Martial Arts Masterships


Sikkim’s Karate player Sushmita Rai hailing from Majhitar, East Sikkim made the nation proud when she won a bronze at the recently concluded World Martial Arts Mastership 2016 held at Cheongju, Chungcheongbuk-do of South Korea.
She was among the 12-member Indian contingent that had participated in the week-long event. The big event had 81 countries across the globe participating in it. Phurba Pangkarma from Sikkim als had participated at the tournament.

Retired Government Employees body formed at Singtam

Over 50 retired government employees attended the first-of-its-kind meeting at Shantinagar Monastery premises at Singtam to form a sub-committee of their own on September 4, 2016.


TB Pradhan was elected as the President, while the other members included Jayashree Chettri as Vice President, Rinzing R Lhamu and B Waiba as Joint Secretary, PP Upprety as Treasurer, TT Bhutia as Publicity Secretary, Surya Kr. Pradhan, Bhim Das Ghimeray and Rupa Gurung as Joint Secretary. 

LN Pradhan was elected as Chief Advisor and additional Advisors included HN Sharma, LP Chettri, Indra Basnet and others. 

The meeting was also attended by members of Sikkim Government Retired Employees. DT Bhutia, President (SGRE) was the Chief Guest on the occasion while other members included PL Sharma, General Secretary, KL Dhakal, Treasurer, Nita Nirash, Publicity Secretary, NP Sharma and Indra Basnet, senior citizens from Singtam were the Guest of Honour for the day. Mohan Pradhan was the host of the day while TB Pradhan gave the welcome address.

Speaking on the occasion, PL Sharma, General Secretary, SGRE gave in detail about the establishment of Sikkim Government Retired Employees and its work done over the years. Sharma spoke about the struggle they have made in their initial years. He further shared his experience as a retired life and spoke about the benefits of an organisation for the retired ones.

DT Bhutia, President of Sikkim Government Retired Employees also congratulated the new members and said with the new body formed at Singtam would strengthen the central body. Bhutia also informed the gathered audience about the requests to be placed before the state government. Other people to speak on the occasion included CP Pradhan, Jayashree Chettri, PP Upprety and LN Pradhan.

70th Independence Day at Ralap SS and Chisopani

RALAP SS: 70th Independence Day was celebrated at Ralap SS with great enthusiasm and joy. Sports, cultural activities and felicitation were the highlight of the day. Basant Lamichaney, Chairman, SABCO, Gangtok was the Chief Guest of the day while other distinguished guests present on the occasion included Am Prasad Sharma, former MLA Singtam Khamdong, MT Sherpa, Director, School Education/RMSA, HRDD, Gangtok,  Lobzang Bhutia, JE, HRDD, Gangtok, Panchayat members, guardians and others.
The Chief Guest unfurled the national tri colour flag thereafter the students and the gathered crowd sang the national anthem. Bishal Sunwar, Panchayat read out the HCM message send to the school. Dorjee Sherpa, Principal of Ralap SS gave the welcome speech where he thanked everyone for their participation. The students of the school participated at March Pass and drill that was thoroughly enjoyed by the crowds. The cultural events were other mass attraction that had huge appreciation.
LD Dhakal, the founder teacher of the school (1974) was felicitated by the Independence Day Celebration Committee where Sharmila Chettri, Panchayat read out the citation. Dakhal was presented citation and a shawl by the Chief Guest. The other highlight of the day the Open Football tournament was won by Evergreen Club, Sumin defeating Border Road Organisation FC, Ralap with four goals to two. Winner teams lifted the trophy and a handsome amount of Rs 50,000 and the runner-up team took home a runner trophy and a cash of Rs 30,000.

CHISOPANI, East Sikkim: Jas Lal Pradhan, Arjuna Awardee Boxer, Asian Games Gold Medalist and former Olympian was the Chief Guest at the 70th Independence Day Celebration held at Sakyong Chisopani JHS ground. The major attraction of the day was the felicitation ceremony followed by Volleyball exhibition match and the final of the Open Football Tournament.
Satish Chandra Pradhan, Headmaster of Sakyong Chisopani JHS gave the welcome speech where LN Sharma, teacher of the school read out the HCM message. School staff joined the students at the ground during the singing of the national anthem at the time of flag hoisting. The students of Sakyong Chisopani JHS presented parade, yoga demonstration, rhymes by junior classes and cultural programs that was appreciated by everyone. Village sports that included tug of war and passing the ball had participants from the public. Members of different Self Help Group presented an integration song. 

The major highlight of the celebration was the felicitation of three personalities by Sirwani Chisopani GPU and the Celebration Committee that included Ajay Rai, Office-In-Charge, Singtam Police Station, Sonam Bhutia, Range Officer, Forest Department, Singtam and Manju Shanker, Branch Manager, IDBI Bank, Singtam. Volley Ball exhibition match played between teachers of Sakyong Chisopani JHS and village team of Chisopani was won by the school team. DP Pandey was presented with the best player trophy. The team of Chorten Monk won the Open Football Tournament in an extra time. The winner and the runner team won trophies along with Rs 30,000 and Rs 20,000 respectively.

Damage to NH10 brought up in Lok Sabha

PRESS RELEASE

5 August 2016, New Delhi: Hon’ble Member of Parliament of Sikkim Constituency, Mr. P.D Rai brought to the notice of the Lok Sabha the current situation of the damaged National Highway-10 due to incessant rains leading to frequent landslides and building of low level dams on Teesta River. The house was informed about the critical importance of the highway which is the lifeline of Sikkim given the lack of rail and air connectivity.
Mr. Rai stressed on the strategic and economic importance of the highway leading to Sikkim as it sustains all forms of economic activity which include our exports of organic produce and maintain the tourism industry of Sikkim. It thus, affects our farmers and young people engaged in tourism.  He urged the Government to take immediate cognizance of the situation and take necessary action as the situation has aggravated to a point where there is imminent danger of huge disruption. Mr.Rai also expressed his concern on the vulnerability of the people of Sikkim due to limited access in case of closing of the highway even for a few hours.

The matter was brought up as a Matter of Urgent Public Importance under rule 377 of the rules of procedure of Lok Sabha. A reply from the Minister of Road Transport & Highways is expected shortly.

Singtam Basibiyalo visits Sumin Mangthang JHS

SINGTAM, JULY 29: Singtam Basibiyalo made a special appearance during the inauguration of the new school building of Sumin Mangthang JHS on July 28. BB Rai, Area MLA Namcheybong Constituency  inaugurated the new building while other guests included Puran Gurung, Chairman Denzong Agricultural Co-Operative Society, Sonam Dezongpa, Joint Director, HRDD and others. Highlight of the day was inauguration of the school building along with felicitation program, cultural program and a football match.

Famed literary forum Singtam Basibiayalo had been a platform for singers, dancers and poets in and around Singtam since last two decades. At the function in Sumin Mangthang too, participants from Basibiyalo presented song and dance program. Dinesh Dahal, Pritam Sundas, Srizu Basnet and Dristi Dahal entertained the gathered crowds with their soulful songs while Surabhi Chettri performed a classical dance.
Mohan Pradhan ‘Neeraj’, Sansthapak Singtam Basibiyalo was the host of the one hour long program. Other members of the Basibiyalo family included TB Pradhan, Advisor, Ganesh Pradhan, Krishna Chettri and  Kamal Gurung. Noted poet Chakrapani Bhattarai and Ram Sharma ‘Firkey’, stand up comedian also enthralled the crowds with their poetry and humour. Singtam Basibiyalo had also sponsored trophies for the open dance competition of the day that was participated by the students of Sumin Mangthang and other nearby organisations..

Second day of Singtam 202nd Bhanu Jayanti Celebration concludes

SINGTAM, JULY 11: The second day of the Singtam 202nd Bhanu Jayanti Celebration showcased the cultural talent of the participants in and around Singtam. Inter School and Open nepali folk dance competition was held on July 10 at Community Hall, Singtam.
Garjaman Gurung, Minister Roads & Bridges Department, Cultural Affairs & Heritage Department was the Chief Guest of the day. Other distinguished guests included Shyam Pradhan, Parlimentary Secretary – HRDD, Uttam Pradhan, Chairman Sikkim Film Board, Sawan Pradhan, President Singtam Nagar Pnachayat and his Councillors and others. Mohan Pradhan Neeraj, General Secretary of the Singtam Bhanu Jayanti Committee was the host of the day while TB Pradhan, Vice President; Singtam Bhanu Jayanti gave the welcome speech.

In the colourful and festive moods students of Singtam SS stood first among nine different participating schools to win the Inter School Competition followed by Sirwani SS and Little Angel Academy, Adarsh Goan. Similarly in the Open Category Competition, V-Matrix Group and Roshni & Group grabbed second and third position while Natraj Kala Kendra was awarded the first position. Pritam Sundas, Srizu Basnet, Arun Subba entertained the crowd with their songs and humour. 

Singtam 202nd Bhanu Jayanti Celebration starts

SINGTAM, JULY 09: 202nd Bhanu Jayanti Celebration kicks off at Singtam with Inter School and Open Competitions for both Ramayan Path and Nepali Poetry held at Community Hall, Singtam on July 9. Similarly the next day on July 10, the Nepali Folk Dance Competitions will be completed. The top three winners of Ramayan Path, Poetry and Nepali Folk Dance Competition will perform on July 13th Bhanu Jayanti celebration to be held at Singtam Bazaar.
Sonam Dadul Bhutia, MLA Tashiding Constituency was the Chief Guest on the occasion. Other distinguished guests present on the occasion included Bimal Lamichaney, President Sirwani Chisopani GPU, Sawan Pradhan, President Singtam Nagar Pnachayat and his Councillors and others. The judges for the competition included Chunnilal Ghimeray, DP Adhikari, Dayaram Bhattrai, Tshering Bhutia. Mohan Pradhan Neeraj, General Secretary of the Singtam Bhanu Jayanti Committee was the host of the day while TB Pradhan, Vice President; Singtam Bhanu Jayanti gave the welcome speech.
Sonamati Senior Secondary School swept the Inter School Competition of both Ramayan Path and Nepali Poetry competition for the 202nd Bhanu Jayanti Celebration.  While the students of Singtam SSS and Sumin Linzey SS stood second and third respectfully at the Ramayan Path competition.  In the nepali poetry competition, Ivan Rai, Sonamati Senior Secondary School won the competition followed by Surekha Subba, Little Angel Academy, Adarsh Goan and Abilasha Chettri, Sirwani Secondary School bagging second and third position.
In the Open Nepali Poetry Competition, Krishna Dungel from Bermoik won the first prize while Sitaram Sapkota and Nishant Dulal stood second and third. While in the Open Nepali Poetry Competition Kush Narayan Dahal and Yadu Thatal went on to bag second and third position while the brother duo of Krishna Dhungel and Naren Dhungel went on to win the Open Poetry category.
Ram Sharma, Khamdong, noted stand up comedian entertained the audience with his humour while Dinesh Dahal and Pritam Sundas rendered a song each on the occasion.

Second coordination meeting of 202nd Singtam Bhanu Jayanti Celebration held

The second coordination meeting of upcoming 202nd Bhanu Jayanti Celebration was held on July 3rd at Community Hall, Singtam. Different matters regarding the celebration were discussed. The members for the celebration committee were increased and work distributions for those members were also carried on. The official poster of the 202nd Bhanu Jayanti Celebration was also released on the day. Somnath Poudhyal, Agriculture Minister and Area MLA would be the Chief Patron of the Bhanu Jayanti Celebration Committee, reads the press release.
Press release further reads, Tourism Minister Ugen T. Gyatso would be Chief Guest on that day and renowned literature Dr. Kabita Lama would grace the occasion as a special guest. Major highlight of the 202nd Bhanu Jayanti Celebration would be felicitation of meritorious students of Singtam surroundings, Traditional Dress display from different communities of Sikkim, Musical program by the artistes from Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Kolkata and Sikkim followed by Shova Yatra competition, Poetry competition, Ramayan Paath competition and Nepali folk dance competition.  The last date of confirmation to participate on different competitions is July 7th.
The audition round for the Poetry and Ramayan Paath (Inter School and Open) competition would be held on July 9thwhere Gopal Baraily, MLA West Pandam Constituency and Am Pd. Sharma, former MLA Khamdong Singtam would be the Chief Guest and the Special Guest. Similarly on July 10th Nepali Folk Dance (Inter School and Open) competition would be held where GM Gurung, Culture Minister would be the Chief Guest while Uttam Pradhan, Chairman Film Board and Suman Tiwari, Chairman Sports as special guests, reads the press release.

Sikkim Tamang Youth Society successfully concluded their Felicitation Cum Social Support Programme” at #Stone Age Eco Village Resort , NH 10, Sangkhola, East Sikkim under the theme of “Priority to the Education & Serving the needy”. STYS had felicitated 10 inspiring youth of Sikkim who had set the living example through their hard work, creativity and talent. Chief Minister & Organic Mission of Sikkim makes its mark in Antarctica

New Delhi: 20 June:  I've moved and written a letter to the Sikkim Government from Antarctica congratulating all of you for the work you are doing for the planet. I have posted it from the southernmost city of the world Ushuaia” gushed Pradeep Karuturi.

He was part of a two-week expedition to Antarctica in March 2016 organised by International Antarctic expert and explorer Robert Swan. Pradeep is a climate change enthusiast who went to Antarctica recently on a climate change Expedition by the 2041 team. “I felt great happiness in sharing that Sikkim became an organic state to the International team of 30 different nations.”

He wants to come to Sikkim to study the climate-positive work that is being undertaken by the Chief Minister, Pawan Chamling, led Government and the people.

“Ice melting is happening very rapidly in Antarctica and I believe Climate Change is the biggest issue that we need to take action immediately.I believe Sikkim is a hope for the rest of the country that we need to use our science and technology in par with nature not against nature” he adds.

Pradeep Karuturi graduated in 2014 and joined an MNC after which he joined the social sector engaging in multiple social activities. He worked with different agencies to help out with disaster relief including traveling to Nepal after the earthquake to distribute goods. Pradeep came in touch with MP Lok Sabha, and PD Rai, at the Vision India Foundation lecture given by MP yesterday.

Sikkim Philatelic Society completes a decade

SINGTAM, JUNE 13: Eminent Philatelists from Sikkim and West Bengal jointly celebrated the completion of ten years of the Sikkim Philatelic Society. A get-together was organized at Ram-Gauri Sangralaya, Rhenock to mark the occasion where a small philatelic exhibition cum General Meeting of the Society was also held.

The highlight of the day was the renaming of Sikkim Philatelic Society as Sikkim Philatelic and Numismatic Society. Plan to organize a stamp exhibition in September; formation of hobby club in schools, membership drive, and others was discussed.

A general meeting was held where Sushil Karthak, a well-known philatelist from Siliguri, and Ravi Sevak, philatelist and numismatic expert from Kolkata was the President and the chairperson. 

Different matters of importance for the development and the promotion of the hobby were discussed. Ganesh Pradhan, President of Sikkim Philatelic Society gave the welcome speech and appreciated the presence of the distinguished guests. Shital Pradhan, General Secretary of SPS and the host of the day gave, in brief, the activity report of the society in the last ten years. He spoke about the different medals won by the members of SPS on different state and national philatelic exhibitions participated. Logo of Sikkim Philatelic and Numismatic Society designed by Deepen Pradhan was also launched by Ravi Sewak

Ravi Sevak, philatelist and numismatic expert from Kolkata spoke about the role of the numismatic in the promotion of philately. Similarly, Roshan Prasad and Padam Parajuli spoke on the topic of “Building up an exhibit and its rules” and “Role of a stamp dealer in the promotion of philately. Other people to speak on the occasion included Sushil Karthak and Vivek Yonzon. Deepen Pradhan gave the vote of thanks. It was also decided by the Society members to include Dipok Dey, Madhukar Jhingan, SK Biswas, and Ravi Sewak as a Patron.

Sakyong Chisopani JHS celebrates World Environment Day 2016



Sakyong Chisopani JHS held a painting competition on the occasion of the World Environment Day celebration where the top three selected winners were awarded gifts as encouragement. More than a hundred saplings were planted around the school premises. Saplings included flowering and non-flowering plants, fruits, and others.

Satish Chandra Pradhan, Headmaster of the school in brief shared the message of the importance of the among the students. He made aware of the significance of a green and clean environment for the benefit of the human race. A two-day event was organized in the school; on Friday afternoon an inter-house painting competition was held where four students of each house had participated. 

Bishal Subba (class vi) and Shanker Gurung (class viii) representing Daffodil house stood first and second while Sharmila Subba (class viii) of Orchid house stood third. On the second day, the plantation was done around the school premises where saplings of banana, guava, mango, java kusum, silver oak, lemmon, jambir, bottle brush, neem and others were planted.

Sarvo Dharma Buddheshwar Sanasthan, Chujachen, East Sikkim, felicitated Tsewang Choden Sherpa, teacher of Posakay Primary School, for her contribution to the school on May 20. She was presented with the felicitation letter on the Inaugural Day of Buddha Purnima.
The felicitation reads, “She has been serving at the Posakay Primary School since March 2, 2005, and has been found much inclined towards the students. She is known for her punctuality, best teaching methods, and ability to cope with students. It was her contribution that made Posakay Primary School a prominent center of education in the vicinity.”
