DARJEELING wins 2 Bronze and a Special School Collection Prize at WEBPEX 2019

SINGTAM, NOVEMBER 25: Members of Alpine Philately and Numismatic Society (APNS), Darjeeling - Mrs. Nilema Yonzone, Mr. Anand Yonzone and students of North Point Academy, a school in Singamari, Darjeeling won 2 bronze medals and a Special School Collection Prize at the State Level Philatelic Competition WEBPEX ‘Ekla Chalo Re -2019’. The 6 days exhibition was held at the Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata from the 16th to the 21st of November 2019.



The two Philatelists representing APNS won bronze medals with their thematic Philatelic exhibits titled ‘Woman Empowerment and ‘The Postal System’ under the single frame category. Students of classes 4 and 5 of North Point Academy (NPA), Darjeeling also won Special School Collection Prize for their collective school collection. NPA has an active Philately Club run under APNS and this is their second achievement after the District Level First Prize won at KALIMPEX in 2018.

‘APNS, formed with the sole motive of promoting intellectual hobbies amongst the youth, to keep them away from the ill elements of society, especially mobile phone addiction has headed the right direction’ said Vivek Yonzone, the Secretary, APNS. He congratulated all the winners at the WEBPEX.

‘The Society takes pride in what it has achieved in just a period of a year since its inauguration and we plan to influence more people, help more schools run Philately and Numismatic Clubs’ added Vivek. He thanked the Postal Department and everyone involved in organizing such events and also for helping APNS in many ways.

Sikkim Philatelists grabs 2 Silver and 3 Bronze at WEBPEX- 2019

SINGTAM, NOVEMBER 21: Sikkim won two silver and three bronze medals at Ekla Cholo Re 2019, West Bengal State Philatelic exhibition held at Kolkata. The philatelic exhibition was held from November 16-22 at the Academy of Fine Arts, Maidan, Kolkata.

Roshan Prasad and Sishir Pradhan won Silver for their exhibits ‘The story of Cricket’ and ‘The World of Football’. Ganesh Kumar Pradhan, Sunita Gurung, and Tanishka Pradhan won three bronze medals for their exhibits Philatelic Exhibition of India, Special Cover Issued in Sikkim, and Jawaharlal Nehru.




Seven philatelists from Sikkim Philatelic and Numismatic Society had participated at the exhibition where five of them came with medals is a big achievement for Sikkim, told Shital Pradhan, Secretary SPNS in the press release. This time we had three new entries and it is encouraging all three brought laurels to the state. Roshan Prasad and Sishir Pradhan had submitted five frames for the exhibition while the rest of the philatelists had displayed single-frame exhibits, added Pradhan.

Silver Jubilee Celebration of Sikkim Newar Guthi

11.11.19: A two-month-long event to commemorate the completion of 25 years of existence of Sikkim Newar Guthi concluded yesterday. A number of events such as Newar Folk Dance, Newar Musical Instrument, State Level Open Talent Hunt and Bhaju & Maeju Sikkim Competitions were organized. Cleanliness Drive and Awareness programmes were held at various Sakha levels on 2nd October 2019.


The Grand Finale of all the competitions were held at Manan Bhawan on 9th November 2019 and was graced upon by the Hon’ble Minister, Buildings & Transport, Shri Sanjit Kharel as the Chief guest. 7 teams under Newar dance, 4 individual performances under Newar Instrument, 18 participants under State Level Open Talent Hunt and 10 competitors each under Bhaju and Maeju Sikkim competed for the most coveted trophies. 

Newa Bhay Bowneykuthi, Singtam won the 1st prize in the Newar Dance competition, while Rongli and Timberbong Sakha won the 2nd and 3rd prize respectively. Babita Pradhan of Rongli won the 1st prize in the Newar Instrument Competition. The title of Bhaju and Maeju Sikkim was conferred on Pragesh Pradhan, Ravangla and Rabina Pradhan, Singtam respectively. 


The first prize in the Open Talent Hunt Competition was awarded to Anand Gurung (Rapper), while the 2
nd and 3rd prize was won by Sneha Bansal (Dancing) and Milan Bishwakarma (Singing) respectively. Six consolations prizes were also awarded. Amidst these, EMRS School Gangyap made a scintillating Choir performance which left the entire crowd awed by the level of talent of these tribal students. 

The Grand programme was organized on 10th November 2019. Hon’ble Chief Minister of Sikkim, Shri P.S. Tamang (Golay) could not attend the function due to his pre-occupation and he was represented by Shri Arun Upreti, Hon'ble Minister, Urban Development & Food as the Chief Guest. On this occasion, Founder Pioneers and Founder Members were felicitated for the contribution and pain they took to establish this Great Institute. 


Advisory Council members, past and present Executive members, and Zonal Presidents were also felicitated for their contribution to the cause of Newars of Sikkim. For their outstanding contribution in the field of language, culture, tradition and food, Dentam, Melli and Singtam Sakha Guthis were felicitated with Citations. 


Academic excellence in Class X was given to Master Pravesh Pradhan, Tadong and in Class XII to Master Kshitij Pradhan, Dentam. Silver Jubilee Edition Souvenir magazine “Smarika”, Quarterly Magazine “PAU”, Commercial pickles as well as the website of Sikkim Newar Guthi “www.sikkimnewarguthi.org” was launched by the Chief Guest. 


The celebrations ended with Grand Musical Evening being organized at Manan Bhawan on both 9th and 10th November 2019. Renowned artists with the likes of Suresh Kumar, Pushpan Pradhan, Banika Pradhan, Remanti Rai among others made sparkling performances which left the entire crowd overwhelmed and delighted. 


The events were graced upon by the Hon’ble Minister, Forest, Shri Karma Loday Bhutia and Hon’ble Minister, Education and Land Revenue, Shri Kunga Nima Lepcha as Chief guests respectively. The entire two-month-long events were held in a most eco-friendly manner without the use of plastics and other non-biodegradable substances.

Gangtok prepares for SNG Open Talent Hunt 2019 grand finale


SINGTAM, NOVEMBER 4:  Eighteen participants get selected for the Sikkim Newar Guthi State Level Open Talent Hunt Show Season 2 to be held at Manan Kendra, Gangtok on November 9.  The two day program held on the occasion of twenty fifth anniversary of the fornation of Sikkim Newar Guthi will have various events including Bhaju-Meiju Competition, Newari Dance Competition, and other competitions. Different popular artiste will entertain the crowd at Gangtok.

Sixty seven participants participated at the semi-final that was held in two rounds. Thirty two participants were selected after the first round and on the next round Top 18 candidates were finalised for the grand finale. Participants from different corner of the state gave their best performances that were enjoyed by the gathered audiences. The selected category that went passed for the grand finale were Singing, dancing painting, acting, and cubic art.







DK Pradhan, President, Sikkim Newar Guthi was the Chief Guest of the day. The other distinguished guests of the day were CP Pradhan, LN Pradhan, Advisors-Newa Bhay Bowneykutti, Sushen Pradhan, Secretary, SNG Youth Affair, Binod Pradhan, President, Newa Bhay Bowneykutti and others. The judges of the day were Komal Gurung, Manoj Rai and Praja Pradhan while Rajesh Pradhan was the Observer.

Regan Chettri, actor, music director from Singtam based at Nepal was also invited at the show. Chettri had recently won best lyricist at Sagarmatha Award function for his Nepali film Chi Musi Chi which was also composed by him. The talent hunt show is organised by Sikkim Newar Guthi Youth Affairs in collaboration with Inspire Academy, Arithang and Sang-Martam Jan Sewa Sangathan on the occasion of Silver Jubilee Celebration of Sikkim Newar Guthi to promote the local talents of Sikkim.
