Pride of Sikkim 02 : Sukmit Gurung (Singer)

Her claim to fame are popular songs like Phulda Jore Pari, O Mero Priyatam, Masakka Maskera, Chiso Batas, Badal Pariko Desh Ma, and Relimai. A household name in the Nepali listening audiences, Sukmit Gurung has a legacy to speak for.

Born in a Lepcha family in Gangtok as Sukmit Ongmu Lepcha to father Bi Ongmu Lepcha and mother Pasang Chiring Lepcha, she started singing for the church in her teens. She quickly entered the Nepali music industry, winning the singing contest in Radio Nepal at a young age.
Because of her contribution to Nepali music, she was appointed as the assistant music director in Nepal Pragya Prathisthan, a government organisation to promote Nepali literature, music, art and culture

Newa Bhay Bowneykuthi prepares to host first of its kind Sikkim Newar Executives Coordination Meeting

26.06.22: Members of Newa Bhay Bowneykutti, Singtam Sakha Guthi held a meeting cum membership renewal program at Nepali Dharamsala. Bhaju Mahendra Pradhan, Vice President, Sikkim Newar Guthi and Advisor, NBB was the chairperson of the program. The highlight of the meeting was sharing of the plans of the organisation, the extension of executive members and the distribution of work for the forthcoming coordination meeting between the Executive Members of Sikkim Newar Guthi and twenty-three Sakha Guthi from different parts of Sikkim. Members also renewed their memberships. 

Meiju Kamala Pradhan (Vice President), Bhaju Basant Pradhan (Joint Secretary), Meiju Meena Pradhan (Secretary I - Culture and Literature), Bhaju Prakash Kazi Shrestha (Secretary II - Culture and Literature), and Bhaju Shital Pradhan (Publicity Incharge) were added to the existing executive members of Newa Bhay Bowneykutti.




Bhaju Gopal Pradhan, President NBB congratulated the new office bearers. He informed the gathered members of the celebration of Kwati Purney, which falls in the next two months' time. He further said about an opportunity to organise a state-level Newar event on July 2nd, 2022 at Singtam. 



Speaking on the occasion, Bhaju Manoj Pradhan, General Secretary talked about the forthcoming first-of-its-kind coordination meeting to be held in the state. Different Coordinators were selected for the successful completion of the event. Chairperson Bhaju Mahendra Pradhan spoke about the importance of the executive's coordination meeting. He shared about different activities carried out by the Sikkim Newar Guthi over the last few months.

Bicephalic (two headed) calf born in Sikkim

Polycephaly is termed the condition in an organism with more than one head. Bicephalic is the most common of all i.e. the two head animals. Three such incidents had been recorded in Sikkim in recent times. In both cases, the calf was born with two heads and four eyes. 

The three cases I recorded included the places of Kingstone, near Rhenock (February 24, 2023), Dalapchand, near Rongli (April 23, 2022) and Rorathang (October 19, 2017) near Rangpo. All are from Pakyong District.

Pride of Sikkim 01 : Sonam Gyatso (Mountaineering, Mt. Everest, Padma Bhushan, Padma Shri and Arjuna Awardee)


Sonam Gyatso is the second Indian and the first Sikkimese to climb Mount Everest. He was part of the first successful Indian Everest Expeditions that climbed Mount Everest in May 1965. He then held the record for the oldest person (aged 42) to reach the Summit and also for the longest time (50 min) spent at the peak without an oxygen supply. In the same year, the Indian government honoured his achievement with the Padma Bhushan.



He was also honoured with Padma Shri and Arjuna Award. Gyatso is the only Sikkimese to feature in an Indian stamp. He established Sonam Gyatso Mountaineering Institute (SGMI), a mountaineering school in Gangtok.

Singtam Bhanu Jayanti Celebration Committee selected

18.03.22, Singtam, The coordination meeting for the 209th Bhanu Jayanti Celebration was held at Singtam Nagar Panchayat Community Hall. Rohit Raj Maharaj, Advisor to the Chief Minister of Sikkim had graced the meeting as the Sabhapati. Distinguish guests from different sections of the society were present on the occasion.  

Meeting passed out resolutions to organize a grand celebration of the birth anniversary of Bhanu Bhakta, a nepali literary legend. Different coordinators were selected for the smooth functioning of the celebration.  


Some of the distinguished people nominated for the Bhanu Jayanti Celebration Committee are as follows – Advisor (Shri Suresh Tamang, (President, Singtam Nagar Panchayat) and his Councilors, and others. President – Dr. MK Sharma (Health Minister and Area MLA Khamdong-Singtam Constituency, Vice President – Rohit Raj Maharaj (Advisor to the HCM), Shri Bhanu Pradhan (OSD to the HCM), Shri BB Chettri (Chairman, Cooperation Department) and Shyam Rai, General Secretary – Shri Mohan Pradhan ‘Neeraj’, Joint Secretary – Shri Mahesh Dahal, Program Coordinator – Shri Sundar Rai, Treasurer – Shri Gajanand Agarwal and others.  




Highlight of this year Bhanu Jayanti celebration shall be the installation of copper statue of the ‘Adikavi’ Bhanu Bhakta at the Bhanu Udhyan, Singtam, where the first phase of the program shall be held thereafter for the next phase of the day long program the venue shall be at Singtam bazaar, opposite Police Station.  

Competitions on Ramayana path, poetry, culture, and traditional dress for the students as well as for others shall be held, the audition dates shall be announced soon reads the press release. Next meeting shall be held on June 23, 2022.

Ranju Lamichaney (Actress) : Shital Pradhan's Autograph Collection

 


Ranju Lamichaney is a former actress who had acted as a lead actress in more than a dozen Nepali films. Her debut film Basain, was an official entry to Oscar in the year 2006 from Nepal. Her claim to fame was the role of 'Sweety" in the popular Nepali TV serial 'Tito Satya'.

Coordination meeting for Singtam Bhanu Jyanti held

Singtam, 11.06.22: The fifth coordination meeting for the upcoming Bhanu Jayanti celebration was held under the chairmanship of Shri Rohitraj Maharaj, Advisor to the Chief Minister of Sikkim. The highlight of the meeting was the installation of a new copper life-size statue of Bhanu Bhakta and a matter of beautification of the entire complex at the Bhanu Udhyan.




Present on the occasion were Suresh Tamang, President, Singtam Nagar Panchayat, Kishore Chettri, Councillor, Singtam Nagar Panchayat, KB Chettri, Joint Director, Sub Divisional Education Department, LN Pradhan, Durga Adhikari, Raghubir Agarwal, Mahesh Dahal and others.
The copper statue of the late poet shall be installed at the opposite end of the existing Bhanu Bhakta bust. Today's meeting passed the resolution wherein Shri LN Pradhan, Shri PP Upretti and Shri Durga Adhikari shall supervise the entire work of the Bhanu Udhyan. Shri Somnath Pandey shall be the coordinator of the Bhanu Jayanti Coordination Committee.
The beautification work of the Bhanu Udhyan shall be undertaken by Shri Raghubir Agarwal, reads the press release. The next meeting shall be held on June 18, 2022, at Community Hall, Singtam.

Sikkim Government Retired Employees Welfare Association, Singtam Branch felicitates Doctors



Singtam, 11.06.22: Members of Sikkim Government Retired Employees Welfare Association, Singtam Branch organised a meeting cum felicitation program at Nepali Dharamsala, Singtam on June 10.

The highlight of the meeting was the felicitation of ‘Doctor’ children of the members of SGREWA Singtam, the welcoming of new members and a discussion of important matters for the development of the organisation. The felicitated personalities included Dr Bhumika Dulal, Dr Saurav Sutradhar, Dr Shikha Poudyal, Dr Prasana Rai and Dr Rachana Rai.

Smt. Laxmi Shilal, recently retired as Deputy Secretary of Health Department was the chairperson of the day. Talks on the upliftment of the organisation, important updates on the pension book, and financial updates were shared by different speakers in the meeting. Pravin Sharma gave the welcome speech while LN Pradhan, President, Bharat Pradhan, General Secretary, Bimla Waiba, Treasurer, SP Kharel, NK Dahal and others spoke on the occasion.
TB Pradhan, former President, Smt. Rinzing Lhamu Bhutia, former General Secretary and Smt. Jaishree Chettri, who had released a Nepali literary book was also felicitated at the event. Recently retired members CM Tiwari, Ganesh Tiwari, Laxmi Shilal, Hansa Rai were offered khadas and welcomed to the organisation.

Bimal Lamichaney is the Sikkim's Brand Ambassador for Swachh Bharat Mission


Shri Bimal Lamichaney is the new Brand Ambassador of Sikkim Swachh Bharat Mission. In a recently held program at Dochum JHS  at 42-Sirwani GPU at Khamdong. Lamichaney was presented with an official letter from the hand of Shri Ganga Prasad, Hon’ble Governor of Sikkim, in the presence of Shri. Sotai Kri, Brand Ambassador, North East India.

Shri Bimal Lamichaney is the former President of Sirwani Chisopani GPU. Shri Praja Pradhan was also announced as the Brand Ambassador of Gangtok District under Sikkim Swachh Bharat Mission on the same program.

Teacher Lomas Dhungel felicitated by Sun Pharma Sikkim

07.06.22: A one-day program on the occasion of World Environment Day was organised at Unit 2 of Sun Pharma Laboratories, Ranipool. The program was graced by Dr Gopal Pradhan, Member Secretary, Sikkim Pollution Control Board who was also the chief guest of the program.



The program started with the plantation of a sapling by the chief guest. Various environmental initiatives undertaken by Sun Pharma Sikkim were highlighted. The chief guest was presented with a Token of Gratitude.  He imparted awareness of various aspects of the environment to the staff of Sun Pharma. 


The event also saw the presentation of Lomas Dhungel who is working as a teacher in Government Senior Secondary School, Makha. He was felicitated with a Token of Appreciation for his works on the Hariyo Makha project.


Sakyong Chisopani JHS observed World Environment Day 2022

 06.06.22: Sakyong Chisopani JHS observed World Environment Day with the plantation drive of 145 different flowering and non-flowering saplings around the school premises. There were also fruit saplings.




PB Subba, Headmaster of the school in his address informed the students of the postponed plantation festival due to yesterday’s holiday. He spoke about the importance of plants in our daily lives. Chodenla Tamang, School Captain also spoke about the need to preserve and conserve the plants for the next generation.
