SGSS celebrates 74th R’Day; felicitates its three members

27.01.2023, Singtam: Shantinagar Gaon Sudhar Samiti celebrated the 74th Republic Day at Badminton Court, Shantinagar, Singtam. Mrs Keemti Rai, Assistant Commissioner, Commercial Tax Department, Rangpo, the Chief Guest of the day unfurled the tricolour flag.

This event also saw a first as a photo frame of Bharat Mata was offered flowers after the national anthem by all the guests. The highlight of the day was the launch of SGSS’s annual calendar and felicitation program. Other distinguished guests included – Mohan Pradhan ‘Neeraj’, Somanth Pandey, Sarad Lama, SK Rai and others.


Keemti Rai, the Chief Guest and other guests released Samiti's calendar for the year 2023. TB Pradhan, KN Dulal and KB Sundas, all Advisors of the Shantinagar Gaon Sudhar Samiti were felicitated for their contribution towards the upliftment of society. SK Rai, Sarad Lama and BB Tamang, advisors of SGSS, were given an appreciation letter for being members of SGSS’s Election Committee. This committee successfully conducted the election of executive members. Several other active members of SGSS were also presented with appreciation letters.



The Chief Guest appreciated the different works carried out by the organization. She said the organization stood out for its equality as a Chief Guest. She further spoke about the importance of the day. Krishna Chettri, President, SGSS in his speech highlighted different steps taken by the organization for the betterment of society. He added that a proposal for a garbage vehicle for Shantinagar is in the pipeline. Furthermore, the Rani Khola Walkway was declared that day a No Smoking and No Drinking Zone.


Suman Sunar, Treasurer, SGSS gave the annual financial report of the organization. Anand Lamichaney, Vice President, SGSS spoke about the activities conducted by the organization in the last year. Other people speaking on the occasion included Mohan Pradhan Neeraj, SK Rai and TB Pradhan.

Sikkim closes for a day in support of their CM

A 12-hour bandh call by the supporters of the ruling SDF party was observed today. The bandh was called to protest the burning of Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling's effigy by the Shiv Sena activists on the 11th of September in Siliguri, West Bengal charging CM Chamling with having 'dual nationality. Except for Army and GREF all other Vehicles, as well as shops, were closed. Such a state bandh was last held ten years back. (photographs from Singtam)

Snake like fish caught in Singtam River

The  Indian mottled eel,  locally known as Raj Bam,   was recovered from the Singtam River at Golitar this early morning.  The snake-like fish weighed around 7 kg and was four feet long. The local people said that they had never seen this species for so long. Such mysterious-looking marine fish are also sighted from time to time on the river banks, local people added.
