The snow lion, also called Seng,
embodies vitality, dignity, lightness, and purity. Mythical animal sculptures
often grace the entrances of monasteries, depicting these creatures as
protectors guarding sacred spaces. Although the earliest mention of this animal
dates back to Wu Cheng'en's book 'Journey to the West' published in 1592 during
the Ming dynasty, where it was represented by Yokai, a supernatural entity, the
snow lion's significance in Tibetan culture predates this reference.
Introduced by Chador Namgyal, the third Chogyal of Sikkim, the tradition of the snow lion dance, also known as Singhi Chaam, persists to this day. This dance, performed during various
festivals, pays homage to the mighty Kanchenjunga, the prominent deity in this region. Male dancers, adorned in masks and elaborate attire, beautifully portray this mystical dance. Today, diverse cultures attribute variations of the snow lion dance across Buddhist traditions.

Ganga Lake, also known as Geykar
Sinyi, is a beautiful natural lake 6 kilometers from Itanagar. The name
Ganga Lake could be due to the popular Ganga Market nearby.
Boating at Ganga Lake offers a
chance to appreciate the natural beauty of the surroundings, observe the
diverse flora and fauna, and soak in the peaceful ambiance. It provides an
opportunity to connect with nature and spend quality time with loved ones. I
could see Suni and Suyog enjoying the moment, but I had to stop Suyog several times
not to play with water. His play reminded me of my childhood boating experience
at Mirik with my mother.
The lake is one of the popular tourist attractions in Itanagar. It is known for its picturesque views and tranquil atmosphere. The lake is a must-visit destination for nature lovers and those seeking peace and serenity. The lake is an enclosed water body locally called Geyker Sinyik in the Nyishi dialect, and the nearby vegetation makes it green.
There are two types of boat rentals
available. A two-seater boat can be rented for half an hour for INR 150. A four-seater ship, which can accommodate more people, is
available for rent for the same duration for INR 250, and we settled
for it.
These boat rides offer visitors the
opportunity to explore the serene beauty of Ganga Lake while enjoying a
peaceful time on the water. A little later, our Sonam Sir's family joined us at the boating, and we clicked each other at the Lake.
The lake has an interesting story
behind its creation. It was first discovered by a person named Tai Bida. According
to the legend, Tai Bida searched for his lost mithuns, a type of
domesticated cattle that is now the state animal of Arunachal Pradesh. While
searching for his mithuns, Tai Bida stumbled upon this serene lake surrounded
by lush greenery and lofty mountains.
Ganga Lake is believed to be blessed by the goddess Ganga. However, some stories suggest the lake was named after the nearby Ganga Market. Boating at this serene lake offers a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life, allowing visitors to appreciate the natural beauty of the surroundings and connect with nature.
The lake is a popular tourist attraction and a must-visit destination for nature lovers and those seeking peace and tranquillity. While exploring the lush greenery and lofty mountains surrounding the lake, visitors might wonder about the story behind the lake's name and the actual reason behind its creation.
Itanagar Gompa (Thupten Gatsaling Monastery, Siddharth Vihar) was one of the
places we had heard of when we checked the popular tourist spots in and around
Itanagar.
After wrapping up our visits to
Ganga Lake and Itanagar Zoo, we arrived at the Gompa in the dusk - a place of
great spiritual significance. This beautiful monastery, built in 1974,
showcases the teachings of Tibetan Buddhism and the rich culture of the region
with its vibrant colours and intricate design.
Getting there was a scenic adventure
with my wife Suni and son Suyog. The nearest Naharlagun Railway Station is just
5 kilometers away, and if you're flying in, Lilabari Airport in Assam is the
closest, at about 67 kilometers away.
Stepping into the Gompa, I was
immediately struck by the peaceful atmosphere. The prayer hall, adorned with
lovely paintings, provided the perfect space for quiet reflection.
During my visit, I had the pleasure
of sharing this experience with Sonam Sir's family - Sonam Sir, Sakun Madam,
their son Aaden, and Dewa. Together, we participated in prayers and celebrated
cultural events.
The Gompa also offers stunning
views of Itanagar city and the Himalayan peaks. Perched on a hill, it's a
perfect spot to soak in the natural beauty and find peace. The Buddha statue at
the center exudes a sense of calm and compassion.
My visit to Itanagar Gompa was more
than just a journey; it was a deeply spiritual experience. It reminded me of
the importance of finding serenity in our busy lives. This sacred site holds a
special place for anyone seeking a moment of quiet reflection and a glimpse into
the teachings of Tibetan Buddhism.
