The Sikka Mala (also popularly known as Company Mala or Company Sikkha) is a traditional coin necklace cherished in the Newar community, crafted by stringing historic silver or gold coins closely together on a soft red or black cord. In earlier times, traders used British East India "Company" silver coins alongside native Nepali coins, giving this iconic ornament its distinctive name. Culturally, the necklace carries deep meaning as a symbol of prosperity, financial security, and the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi. For Newar families, wearing these real coins was a clever way to keep family savings safe while proudly celebrating the rewards of honest labour and flourishing trade. The Company Mala is worn with great pride during weddings, life-cycle ceremonies, and grand street festivals ( Jatras ), paired beautifully with the classic Haku Patasi .
