Sikkim Express Memories

Sarikah is the new Executive Editor of Sikkim Express in 2007.
I had the same post, though not as 'formalised' in 1987.
In those days, it was really just the Managing Editor Mr. Ram Patro [now deceased] and the Executive Editor [yours truly] who were the 'editorial staff'. There was Dhriba Gurung, who was the Editor and staff of the Nepali langauge side called 'Himali Bela'.
Sikkim Express was the first newspaper in the region to go 'offset'. There was an immense composing machine, a primitive comupter which would work on Wordstar commands. We were also the first in Sikkim to have an electronic typewriter on the golf-ball principle.
Sikkim Express was where I received my 'hands on' training in computers. I started on the princely sum of Rs 700 a month, upped to rs 900 two months later, and after six months, I was received the 'princely wage' of Rs 1400 plus a holiday Christmnas bonus which included a return flight to Patna!
I believe that Mr Ram Patro's son, who was an impish little boy at the time has taken over as Managing Editor.
I'm sure that Sarikah is going to breathe life andfire into thepblication.
She was recently given an award by the Sikkim Government.

    Congratulations Sarikah!

    When I was in Sikkim for a few years, Sarikah had just entered the field of journalism but she did stand out among the numerous hopefuls. I hope she does a great job with Sikkim Express. Wishing her the best.

    i think she has been in the filed for may years ,, by and it feels great to have her article and other published which i read it very intereestingly.. anyways wish her best from overseas sikkim guy

This was a national song of Sikkim sung in the Nepali language during the monarchy system. During the merger with India, the song got banned and later re-released. Two words on the 8th para, which earlier said 'Rajah rah Rani,' were replaced with "Janmah bhumi."     This song was dedicated to the King and Queen of Sikkim. Sikkim closes for a day in support of their CM

A 12-hour bandh call by the supporters of the ruling SDF party was observed today. The bandh was called to protest the burning of Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling's effigy by the Shiv Sena activists on the 11th of September in Siliguri, West Bengal charging CM Chamling with having 'dual nationality. Except for Army and GREF all other Vehicles, as well as shops, were closed. Such a state bandh was last held ten years back. (photographs from Singtam)

Snake like fish caught in Singtam River

The  Indian mottled eel,  locally known as Raj Bam,   was recovered from the Singtam River at Golitar this early morning.  The snake-like fish weighed around 7 kg and was four feet long. The local people said that they had never seen this species for so long. Such mysterious-looking marine fish are also sighted from time to time on the river banks, local people added.
