Nepal’s singing celebrity Anju Pant’s much sought after nepali song “Na Birse Timilai” found a new breathe of life when a  mujra was performed at Namchi Municipal Corporation Hall, last Saturday on March 30, 2012.  Probably the first Nepali mujra performed at any form of stage in Sikkim, Sushma Chettri, Director and Proprietor of Step Dance Sensation Academy (SDSA) won hearts for her marvelous performance. The auditorium was filled with applause and the gathered Namchi audience mesmerized with the performance of the evening. The occasion was the inaugural function of the Step Dance Sensation Academy at Namchi.
Speaking about her performance Sushma Chettri said initially she was reluctant to perform at this song but it was an encouragement from her SDSA team members that made her perform. This is one of my favourite songs and I am happy people have appreciated my effort, added Chettri.
A couple of an hour long programme had many breath taking performances in different forms of dance from the young dancers of the Institute.  The other noted performers of the evening was Poojan Lohagun, Sushila Rai, Surgam Sikkim finalist, Mani Kumar Rai and Sumitra Shanker, finalist of Namchi Mahotsav 2011.

Baba Harbhajan Singh: A story of a dead sepoy

He has defeated death. Believe it or not, but it is true, a kind story in the world- a man from an Indian army on a Nathula border is still doing his duty even after his death some three decades back. 60km from Gangtok towards the panoramic view of the Nathula landscape, a road leads towards the valley of Kupup. Here is the shrine of Baba Harbhajan, popularly known as Baba Mandir. Baba Harbhajan has been guarding the international boundary of the two Asian giants, China and India, over the last three decades. But believe me, he does it alone. Even the army men on the other side of the International Wall confirmed that they had seen a man riding a horse all alone patrolling the border.  Born in Brondal village of Kapurthala, Punjab, Harbhajan Singh joined the 23 rd Punjab Battalion in February 1966 as a sepoy. The year 1968, when the states of Sikkim and North Bengal were under the rage of great natural disasters where, landslides, floods, and heavy rain had taken thousan...

The legend of April "73" Agitation in Sikkim

I was not born when Sikkim got merged with the mighty Indian Union, but being a student of Sikkim History, all that is available to me is a rack of books by different authors and those old folks who had been part of that historical “April ‘73’ Agitation”.  When I go through the history of Sikkim, April ‘73 Agitation holds an important role, mostly as the turning point of the Independent Sikkim and the Sikkim State. The mass demonstrations against the Chogyal rule shocked the 300-year-old monarchy system and ushered in democratic rule in Sikkim.  The agitation was a result “due to big differences which ensued with the demand of repoll in one booth by Kazi Lhendup Dorji and Mr. Krishna Chandra Pradhan, as such the Chogyal had to face the people’s agitation launched by the Joint Action Committee with the tacit blessings of the Government of India. This people’s political movement spearheaded by Kazi Lhendup Dorji finally resulted in Sikkim joining the mainstream as the 22nd State...
