AIDS awareness meet held in Shantinagar

SINGTAM: A medical camp to spread awareness about AIDS was held at Shantinagar, Singtam on July 20. The camp was organized by Navudaya Sangh, a local organization of Shantinagar, Singtam and was sponsored by AIDS Cell from Gangtok. The personage attending the function included members of Navudaya Sangh, the AIDS Cell from Gangtok and the locals of the nearby areas. 

The larger section of the assemblage included the girls in their teens. Speakers at the function narrated in detail the preventive measures to be taken, the role of women in the campaign against AIDS, the medical assistance offered to AIDS patients etc. The talk of the programme included different views on AIDS and discussed about the growing drug addiction among youth. Palmpets and banners were distributed among different schools, NGOs and other institutions.

Speaking on the occasion P.S. Lepcha, President of Navudaya Sangh informed the gathering about the objective of the programme was to create AIDS awareness among the present generations, especially the girls, who play a pivotal role in unfolding the future of tomorrow. Lepcha added the organization this time had set its goals towards the rural areas which had been ignored so far. 

He appreciated the initiative taken by the AIDS cell in bringing forth such programme to this place and especially thanked Dr. Urmilla Pradhan from the AIDS Cell, Gangtok for her valuable verbal communiqué. He also assured such a programme shall carry on in days to come too.

Sikkim Mahinda Thero: A national hero of Sri Lanka

Sikkim Mahinda Thero BY SHITAL PRADHAN I first heard about S Mahinda Thero in 2005 while in Kolkata when I was asked by one of the stamp dealers whether I was interested in a 20 paisa stamp of S Mahinda Thero issued by the Sri Lankan Postal Department in the early 1970s. I collected philatelic items on Buddhism, but I never understood who he was talking about. He told me, as I was from Sikkim, I might be interested to know more about the person, and he went on to add it was Sikkim Mahinda Thero, a Buddhist monk who is regarded as a national hero, a famous poet in the Sinhalese language whose poetry promoted patriotism and the revival of Buddhism to this part of the Island. He promised to send me the stamp of S Mahinda Thero from Colombo through the mail, but I have never heard from him since then.
