Team Pandim lifts women’s Khangchendzonga Shield 2020 cricket tournament

Singtam, November 21: Team Pandim defeated Team Kabru by 14 runs to lift the women’s Khangchendzonga Shield 2020 cricket tournament. This was the first women cricket tournament in the state of Sikkim and organised by Sikkim Cricket Association


Team Pandim batting first scored 115 for the loss of three wickets in their 20 overs. Samayita Roy Prodhan scored 59 runs with 11 fours in her innings; ably supported by Songkit Lhamoo Lepcha and Tabita Subba who added 16 and 14 runs respectively.  The highlight of the Pandim inning included a 75 run partnership in 74 balls between Songkit Lhamoo Lepcha, Captain and Samayita Roy Prodhan.  Purni Maya Gurung took two wickets for 14 runs from her four overs. Dikcha Gurung took the other wicket.


Chasing the total, Team Kabru could only manage 91 runs from their 20 overs loosing eight wickets. Only Nandita Das and Ankita Karki could make double figures (21 & 25). Shristi Rai scalped two wickets giving away 11 runs in her four overs. Yudenmit Lepcha, Mariam Subba and Tika Devi Newar shared a wicket each while three of the Team Kabru batswomen were run-out. Samayita Roy Prodhan was declared Player of the Match for her knock of 59 valuable runs.


Mrs. Sarda Tamang, wife of Shri PS Tamang, Hon'ble Chief Minister of Sikkim was the Chief Guest of the day. The other guests included Ms. Pabitra Bhandari and others.  Lobzang G Tenzing, President, SICA in his speech congratulated the teams for their participation and shared about providing opportunities in days to come.

Four teams with over 50 women players had participated in the tournament that started with league matches. The four teams were – Pandim, Kabru, Simvo and Sinolchu.

1. Player of the Tournament: Purni Maya Gurung (Kabru).
2. Player of the Tournament U19: Yudenmit Lepcha (Pandim).
3. Emerging Player: Diksha Gurung (Pandim).
4. Highest Wicket Taker: Sunita Rai (Siniolchu).
5. Highest Run Scorer: Tshering Ongmu Lepcha (Siniolchu).
6. Player of the Match: Samayita Roy Pradhan (Pandim).

LENDUP DORJEE KHANGSARPA : The First Chief Minister of Sikkim (1975-1979)

Popularly known as L. D. Kazi, became the first Chief Minister of Sikkim in 1975 thus ending over three century old monarchy system. He became the 1st Chief Minister of Sikkim on 14 MAY, 1975 - 17 AUGUST, 1979. He was born in 1904 in Pakyong, East District. A fonuder President of Sikkim Praja Mandal, established in 1946. Later he became the President of Sikkim State Congress and held the post till 1958. In 4th general election held in 1970, Kazi was appointed an Executive Councilor and was assigned the portfolio of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry and Transport Authority. Under his presidency in 1973, the united party secured 31 out of 32 seats of State Assembly and became the first Chief Minister of Sikkim in 1974. He was married to Elisa-Maria Standford in 1968, daughter of a Belgian father and German mother who left her Scottish husband in Burma and married LD Kaji in Delhi in 1957.
