National Science Day celebrated at Chujachen SSS

March 1, Singtam : Chujachen Sr. Sec. School observed National Science Day on February 26, the school organised a science exhibition. Nirpath Gurung, Chairman of OBC along with Jag Maya Chettri, Principal CSSS kick started the program. Five schools from around the vicinity were invited, students from Lokdara, Posakay, Gyangyap, Rongli, Rolep and Chujachen exhibited a plethora of scientific models (self made).

Main motive behind this programme was to generate scientific temper among the students that even primary students from feeder school were invited to participate. Those students were taken to Atal Tinkering Lab. The students were told they can visit the lab at any time in future.

Miss Chettri stated that programs like these act as a launch pad for future researchers and scientists. She further added that the sole purpose of the exhibition/program was to inculcate scientific temperament in the students and also to promote learning via experience. Mr. Gurung briefly addressed everyone present in the program where he encouraged and congratulated everyone for making the day wholesome. The program ended on a very sweet note as the auditorium was filled with smiling faces after the prize distribution.

Sikkim Philately at a glance-2

Ever since Sikkim became part of the Indian Union, four major state-level Philatelic exhibitions had been held organized by the Department of Post. Little is known about the first philatelic exhibition SIKKIMPEX-82 except that among the many participants on the exhibition one of the participants was Late Ganga Kaptan, a legendary figure in Nepali literature. The three-day exhibition had three special covers released. Sikkim Philately had to wait for two decades to have the next major exhibition. Twenty years later in 2002, a three-day exhibition was held at White Hall. It was for the first time the people of Sikkim took a keen interest in that gummed piece of paper. JANHA BAGCHA TEESTA RANGIT

This was a national song of Sikkim sung in the Nepali language during the monarchy system. During the merger with India, the song got banned and later re-released. Two words on the 8th para, which earlier said 'Rajah rah Rani,' were replaced with "Janmah bhumi." This song was dedicated to the King and Queen of Sikkim. The song lyrics were penned by Sanu Lama, and the music was composed by Dushyant Lama. The song was first sung on the birth anniversary of Chogyal Palden Thondup Namgyal on April 4, 1970, at Gangtok by Aruna Lama, Dawa Lama, and Manikamal Chettri. NMBP ASSURED FOR SIKKIMESE HERB Gangtok, May 25: Sikkim medicinal herbs sector is improving with farmers showing encouraging results and assurances coming from the National Medicinal Plant Board (NMPB) for infrastructural and marketing support. In Sikkim nearly 424 species of medicinal plants grow in Sikkim, mostly in the wild, 70 per cent of which are found in the State's high altitude regions above 8,000 feet. The National Medicinal Plants Board has identified around 35 species as having commercial value and will support new schemes for the medicinal plant growers in the state.
