Singtam Newar Sakha Honours Anamika and Ayusha Pradhan with Educational Grant

September 28, 2023: A program was held at the office of the Singtam Government Retired Employees Welfare Association, Singtam branch, where two students from the Singtam Newar Guthi were awarded an Annual Meritorious Educational Grant 2023

The recipients were Meyju Anamika Pradhan and Meyju Anusha Pradhan, both enrolled at Singtam Senior Secondary School in Class 4 and Class 10 respectively. This grant aims to support the students in their studies. Advisors Bhaju LN Pradhan and Bhaju Bharat Pradhan sponsored the grant.



The presentation took place in the presence of Bhaju Gopal Pradhan, President, Bhaju Manoj Pradhan, General Secretary, Bhaju Suresh Pradhan, Advisor, Bhaju Binod Pradhan, Former President, (Newa Bhay Bowneykuthi, Singtam Sakha), as well as the parents, guardians of the recipient students, and members of NBB.




Bhaju Gopal Pradhan extended his congratulations to the two students and offered them best wishes in their future endeavours. Through this press release, Pradhan also expressed gratitude to the Honb’le Chief Minister of Sikkim for granting new land for the Sikkim Newar Guthi. Various matters for the benefit of the Singtam Sakha were also discussed on the occasion.

Sikkim Mahinda Thero: A national hero of Sri Lanka

Sikkim Mahinda Thero BY SHITAL PRADHAN I first heard about S Mahinda Thero in 2005 while in Kolkata when I was asked by one of the stamp dealers whether I was interested in a 20 paisa stamp of S Mahinda Thero issued by the Sri Lankan Postal Department in the early 1970s. I collected philatelic items on Buddhism, but I never understood who he was talking about. He told me, as I was from Sikkim, I might be interested to know more about the person, and he went on to add it was Sikkim Mahinda Thero, a Buddhist monk who is regarded as a national hero, a famous poet in the Sinhalese language whose poetry promoted patriotism and the revival of Buddhism to this part of the Island. He promised to send me the stamp of S Mahinda Thero from Colombo through the mail, but I have never heard from him since then.
