Kolkata, June 15: WORK has been stalled at the 52 km-wide Gangtok-Nathula Highway for the past two weeks because of objections from the state forest department.
In April this year, work on widening of the 52 km stretch into two lanes was started.
The road had received a priority sanction from the Union Surface Transport ministry, which agreed to provide Rs 780 cores for the project.
Border Road Organisation acquired the project, which was to be completed by early 2009.
According to project in-charge Akhilesh Dikshit, work on the road was taken up only after the Union Environment and Forest department gave the go ahead.
However, work was stalled by divisional forest officer Gurung D T Lepcha when he visited the project site on May 30.
