In a bid to promote adventure tourism in the state, Sikkim Tourism in association with India Trawell is organising a mountain biking expedition in March this year. The expedition named 'Khanchendzonga Mountain Biking Expedition 08' from March 3-13 is expected to attract 100 professional bikers including 20 overseas participants. Sikkim Tourism and India Trawell plan to make it an annual event to be held in March.
According to Saroj Nayak, Head - Business Development, India Trawell, the projected investment for the event is about Rs 70 lakhs. "The event is open only for professional bikers. Since this is the first year, we are expecting about 80 Indians and 20 overseas participants," said Nayak. The organisers have also secured an affiliation with International Mountain Biking Association (IMBA) for the event. India Trawell will be organising the accommodation and tickets of the participants. According to Nayak, participants will be accommodated in tents during the event and in hotels before and after the event. "We are also going to offer packages for sight seeing tours on request at minimum charges," said Nayak.
This is the first time Sikkim Tourism is promoting mountain biking in the state and hopes the event evokes good response and generates interest for this adventure sport. Other sponsors for the event are ONGC, Indian Oil, NHPC and MTB cycles. "We are expecting a huge response from the international market next year onwards, as by that time the vent will be well known in both domestic and international markets," said an official from Sikkim Tourism Board.
