Gangtok: Amidst a huge crowd and fans, the Sikkim’s hero and pride, Padmashree Bhaichung Bhutia superstar of Indian football, was felicitated by the Chief Minister Dr Pawan Chamling on the occasion of an exhibition match between Bhaichung XI and Chirag United from Kolkata at Paljor Stadium here on March 9. Sunil Chettri, striker of Indian Football Team, was also felicitated by the Chief Minister.
Son of an Army man, Sunil Chettri is based in New Delhi but he studied in Bahai School, Tadong, when his father was posted in Gangtok. Cabinet ministers and members of Legislative Assembly present on the occasion congratulated Bhaichung for his achievement and for making Sikkim proud.
Speaking to press, Bhaichung conveyed his happiness at getting opportunity to play at Paljor Stadium after a very long gap. He also expressed his gratitude to all the people of Sikkim for their support and encouragement to his game.
The exhibition match started at 1:30 pm. Bhaichung team comprised of, besides Bhaichung himself, players from Indian Football Team, namely, Sunil Chettri, Gauraman Singh, Rendi Singh and NP Pradeep and the rest from different football clubs.
Within first 5 minutes, Sunil Chettri wearing Jersey number 10 delivered a bullet shot from D-box area, which the goal keeper could not handle and Chettri scored the first goal for his team. Maintaing the pressure on the opponents, Chettri scored another goal in the 43rd minute by a magnificent header. After half time, Chirag United geared up and its striker TS Wroden scored a goal for his team in the 72nd minute through a direct shoot. Dominating over Bhaichung XI in the second half, S Oraham from Chirag United scored another goal for his team and an equalizer of the match in the 90th minute. The match ended in a draw.
