The Sikkim government took up the cause of the media with its budget for 2008-09, presented today, allocating Rs 50 lakh as Media Development Fund and a high level committee to examine issues related to the financial health of mediapersons.
The fund would be utilised for training and skill building of mediapersons and enabling them to participate in conferences and workshops to hone their skills, Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling, who is also the state Finance Minister, said presenting the budget at the state assembly.
He said the committee under the state chief secretary would study the minimum wages for mediapersons and provisions of employees provident fund for them and based on its recommendations the state government would announce substantive measures in this regard.
Chamling also announced institution of an annual award of Rs 25,000 for the best report/analysis by a mediaperson on rural issues.
