Danny Denzongpa's first nepali film Mashal

Danny Denzongpa 's first Nepali film, Mashal , was produced by Sikkim Films Corporation Private Limited . Pratap Subba , a popular Nepali film director, directed it. The film was released in 1982. The film had the acting talents of that generation— Rajani Sharma , Danny Denzongpa, Sunil Thapa , Tej Rasaily, Ashok Sharma, Sushila Rayamaji, Ganesh Rijal, C. K. Shreshta, and others. Danny played a blind retired army man, while Sunil Thapa, also in his first Nepali film, was the villain. Kusum Gazmer wrote the lyrics, and Ranjit Gaazmer provided the music. Three songs — Yo Badaal , Dara Khola,  and  Ropaa Hai—are  still remembered to this day. The singers were Udit Narayan , Deepa Ghatraj, and Sushma Shrestha . In an interesting anecdote, I was told by Bhim Rawat, senior journalist and former President of the Sikkim Press Club, that he had watched the movie at Sri Krishna Hall at Rhenock , paying Rs. 1.50 paise for the ticket.

Letter send by Danny Danzongpa's Secretary Madan Mohan Arora

It was very sad news that Danny Danzongpa's Secretary Madan Mohan Arora had passed away on February 10.  It was published in web pages that Arora had a long association with Danny, since his 'Boxer' days. He was more than a Secretary to the Denzongpa family. More popular for his simplicity, Arora was loved by all film fraternity as it was seen many popular actors of all ages paid visits to his prayer meet. Denzongpa family at the prayer meeting. (NDTV) I remember Madan Arora for the two reply letters he had sent to me during 2002 and 2003 when I wrote to Danny Denzongpa.  One of the letters is published above in my post where I had then written to Danny Denzongpa congratulating him for the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award of India after Bharat Ratna, Padma Vibhusan, and Padma Bhusan. The reply was unexpected but the words written on the page were something I still cherish. Thank You, Arora Sir....May you rest in peace.

Danny and his 'Cheese seller' humour

This was an interesting read about our Agya Danny I came across today. In this piece of page from an old Hindi film magazine, an anecdote is mentioned about Danny Denzongpa in which it writes that once Danny was traveling in a plane and while getting accustomed with an Oxford return Indian who pretended not to know him. Danny had introduced him to be from Kathmandu and made Yak Cheese that was exported worldwide.  The person seated beside him had his jaw slumped and Danny continued to tell the man more about Cheese until the person had enough of his foolishness and fell at Danny’s feet and told that he knew that, he was talking to no other than “Danny”. Danny denies and continues his word and says….he looks like him (Danny) and he had been told by people before! Agya you are simply amazing......always love you!!

There should be the sequel of Nepali film Saino….

Nineteen years ago, a small-budget Nepali film was shot entirely in Sikkim. Celebrated local artist Danny Denzongpa played the lead role. The film also featured popular Nepali artists Bhuwan KC and Tripti, Muralidhar from Nepal, and Rakshya, the child artiste.  The film ‘Saino’ was a huge success, and the music set by Ranjit Gazmer is part of a fairy tale. Each of its seven songs holds a legendary status sung by singers like Asha Bhonsle, Udit Narayan, Deepa Narayan, Kumar Kancha, Muralidhar, and Danny himself.    The film was shot in a short span and directed by Ugen Chopel, who became a famed director of Nepali cinema. Saino was more than a cinematic brilliance with dialogues of character actors getting mass appreciation. Who can forget the lines like “ daiba ko daya lay ….and the Pukar Gurung’s act with his signature line…” koi cha mah sangha khelnay ”. Saino was later made into Bengali and Hindi films but with little success. But its Hindi serial version...

Danny's award winning film FROZEN set for release

Joginder Tuteja, Bollywood Trade News Network   Ready for the last two years, FROZEN will finally release in theaters on 1st May. The current stand-off between producers and multiplexes has resulted in quite a few films coming out of cold storage and FROZEN is one of them. Starring Danny Denzongpa in the lead who plays the role of 'Karma', the film depicts the life of a family whose dream-like existence is interrupted by inevitable odds, one after the other. Made in Hindi and Ladakhi, the film was shot at an average height of 12000 feet above sea level in Ladakh, the eastern part of Jammu and Kashmir, bordering China. Produced and directed by Shivajee Chandrabhushan, the film has received 18 highly acclaimed awards.  Not just that, it has also toured 30 international film festivals over the period of time and would now be seeing a release in India. Interestingly, the film would be seeing a staggered release. While in Mumbai the film will be screened beginning 1st May, in...

Danny Denzongpa's nepali song from the film Saino

Do you know Saino was made four times? First, it was a Nepali movie in Bengali, followed by Hindi, and finally, the serial Ajnabhi.  It was named Bandhu in Bengali, and if everyone gets a chance upon the Bengali audio cassette, get a hold of the song  Amai Ley Bhanthey  in Bengali.  I still recall when I first saw Saino at Vajra Hall. I was upset with my stomach but was not ready to miss any of those scenes.  The film was simply dominated by the presence of Danny Denzongpa, ala Aamir Khan in Ghajini. I find it strange Danny too shares a similarity with Aamir Khan, we all know Aamir is very selective about his movies and does one or two films in a year but this trend was started by Danny Denzongpa way back.  No one denies Danny's talent, but very few know he is a great singer and has sung with legends like Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar, and Rafi. He is a good writer. Did you know he even directed a Hindi movie that had Rajesh Khanna as the lead?  Well, co...

Sikkim behind the moving cameras

When I was writing this article, I took notice of the talks about the documentary film  Sikkim,  directed by the maestro Satyajit Ray.  Had Sikkim not remained a thumb-sized state of mighty India and had Ray not been the larger-than-life character after receiving the ultimate dream in filmmaking (the Oscars) in today's scenario, I am sure no one could have ever talked about Sikkim , the long-lost documentary film made on the monarchy rule of Sikkim then in 1971.    It was thought to be lost, and how a single copy was found in the lab of British film archives and how it was converted into DVD format is still more of a mystery, but all thanks to technology, I am sure some days later, we shall watch Ray's fantasy of Sikkim on screen. So when everyone is talking about this small documentary, why not refresh ourselves with a few other Hindi films that were picturized in this spectacular and serene part of Sikkim?      The panoramic beauty of the...

I owe my image of action star to Danny Denzongpa: Suniel Shetty

YAHOO INDIA MOVIES Mumbai, Aug 21 (IANS) Actor-producer Suniel Shetty is all set to pay a tribute to his friend, philosopher and guide Danny Denzongpa by making a film for him. Danny is one man who initially taught him everything there's to learn about good, positive, healthy living. 'I simply love and respect that man to death. He was my co-star in my very first film 'Balwaan'. I owe my image of action star to him,' Suniel, who was recently seen in 'Mission Istaanbul', told IANS. 'It was Danny sir who urged me to take him on in climactic combat in the film. I was very shy. How could I fight a man I had hero-worshipped for so long? But he made me do it. 'He even made me pick him up and throw him on the ground. The impact was deadly. Audiences immediately accepted me as a deadly action hero. They reasoned that if I could beat Danny Denzongpa, I must be the real 'balwaan' (strong person),' he added. Since then Suniel has ceas...

"Sun Sun Kasam Se" sang by DannyDenzongpa and Asha Bhonsle

A cute romantic duet from "Kaala Sona" (1975), picturized on the secondary couple in the film - Farida Jalal and Danny Denzongpa. Playback singing provided by Asha Bhosle and Danny himself! He has quite a unique, endearing singing voice... IMO he sounds a little like Shailendra Singh. Music by the late, great R.D. Burman.
