Renaming of Nar Bahadur Bhandari Government College, Tadong

Silver Oak Tree planted by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1984 at Amdo Golai, Tadong

Silver Oak Tree planted by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1984 I  am sure many of us have seen this Silver Oak tree at  Amdo Golai, near Tadong opposite the traffic point that leads to Indira Bye Pass. More than a decade back there used to be a foundation stone that had words inscribed -  Planted by Indira Gandhi, Prime Minister of India in 1984 . Today I look at this heritage tree and feel sad it seems to have lost its glory and its history. I am sure in the near future the concerned department will surely look into this matter. 22.11.23 : Even after ten years of this post, the tree is strong and beautiful. I am sure someday this tree will have her moment and will be declared a national heritage.

May 27, 2000: The Darkest day of my life

I had experienced several ups and downs in my life, but to me, my darkest hour still remains the 27th of May, 2000. How could I forget that day that shattered me, and my life turned out to be nowhere? Today, though, I did fight against the odds and came out a winner, but still, that day remains the darkest moment in my life. I want to assure my readers that I had RW during my B.Sc examination. I never knew that ‘RW’ means ‘Result Withheld’ until I saw my remarks along with the graduation part 2 result posted on the notice board of Sikkim Government College. With the Botany Honours group at Kolkata It was some eight years ago that the world was excited about the Y2K bug, and I was part of the crowd at Tadong, Sikkim Government College, nurturing dreams of making it big. I had been staying in a small room at Daragoan those days with two friends, one of whom was my batchmate and the other an old school friend who, at the time, was working independently at a private firm in Tadong. ...

From archeologist to self made Sikkim historian

Satyajit Ray with former King and Queen of Sikkim BY SHITAL PRADHAN I never wanted to be a teacher, and at the same time, I never had any options. I had always been interested in history since school, but destiny had other careers for me. When I completed high school, I compromised my dream of becoming an archaeologist and opted for Pure Science streams simply to please my father. In my early schooling days, we were taught to plant dreams, and I dreamed of becoming an archaeologist. Tutankhamun, Stonehenge, Crop Circles, Incas, Mayas, ancient civilizations, and many others were the only things I fantasized about. I regularly visited forest areas in my hometown and searched for things, believing that I was an archeologist and was destined to discover it. Funny ways of life. One day, I found a fossil; it was a petrified fossil with an impression of a Gramineae leaf.  Since 2003, I have been trying to get more information about it without success. I completed my Pure Science...
