APRIL 6:   GANGTOK : The Sikkim government launched a portal ( www.covid19sikkim.org ) for circulating information on coronavirus outbreak at Tashiling Secretariat. The COVID-19 Centralized Information System has been developed by IPR, Govt. of Sikkim. APRIL 7:   GEYZING : Indra Hang Subba, MP and Lok Nath Sharma, PHE Minister visited District Hospital Geyzing and inspected quarantine and isolation centers. Geyzing Girls SSS is made the isolation center where five persons were kept who had returned from outside the state. VP Singh, the then Prime Minister of India had visited Sikkim in 1990 a few months before his fall from PM post. He lost the vote of no confidence when BJP had withdrawn support. NB Bhandari was the Chief Minister of Sikkim during that time. The above photographs were taken at Gangtok found on the website of ‘My Old Arndt Lilley’. VP Singh was at office from 2 nd December 1989 till 10th November 1990. His prime ministerial tenure lasted for 343 days. He died on 27 November 2008, at the age of 77.

Nirmal Mangar, my good journalist friend shares his anecdotes meeting with Prime Minister Modi. He was among the Sikkim Journalist Team that got an opportunity to witness the proceedings of parliament at New Delhi last year.  Nirmal Mangar in his facebook status writes.... " It was last monsoon, I got an opportunity to meet the man of India in Parliament House, I felt pompous and happy to thank him on mentioning Sikkim's organic mission in both the parliaments ( of India and Nepal) also not to forget his Germany visit. I still have a strong memory of him telling ' Main January mein Sikkim aunga (I will come to Sikkim on January) and will declare your state as the first in the country to adopt organic farming ' Finally, the great moment has arrived." Truely a great moment has arrived, we all Sikkimese is awaiting this big moment when PM Modi will declare Sikkim as the fully Organic State.

Silver Oak Tree planted by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1984 I  am sure many of us have seen this Silver Oak tree at  Amdo Golai, near Tadong opposite the traffic point that leads to Indira Bye Pass. More than a decade back there used to be a foundation stone that had words inscribed -  Planted by Indira Gandhi, Prime Minister of India in 1984 . Today I look at this heritage tree and feel sad it seems to have lost its glory and its history. I am sure in the near future the concerned department will surely look into this matter. 22.11.23 : Even after ten years of this post, the tree is strong and beautiful. I am sure someday this tree will have her moment and will be declared a national heritage.

I found it strange that Wikipedia does not mention that an orchid variety had been named after Astronaut Kalpana Chawla who died in Space Shuttle Columbia tragedy. The year was 2003 couple of months after her death the then Prime Minster of India Atal Bihari Vajpee was on his first visit to the Himalayan State of Sikkim. Two new orchid varieties created by K.C. Pradhan, Former Chief Secretary of Sikkim and his son Sailesh Pradhan, both famed Orchid specialist from Sikkim was kept at  Orchid Flower Show, Gangtok. An orchid variety Dendrobium Atal Bihari Vajpayee was named after Atal Bihari Vajpee to mark his first visit to Sikkim while when asked to name the second variety, he simply replied “Kalpana Chawla”. July 09, 2008 18:17 IST The Sikkim Democratic Front on Wednesday endorsed the Indo-US civilian nuclear deal and said it would vote with the United Progressive Alliance whenever Prime Minister Manmohan Singh [ Images ] seeks a confidence vote in Parliament. "We fully stand by the prime minister and the nuclear deal and would accordingly support the confidence vote to be moved by the prime minister in the Lok Sabha whenever he decides to seek it," Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling said in Gangtok.
