Two police personnel suspended GANGTOK, November 12:  Two police personnel from Singtam Police Station have been suspended following the death of Bikram Bishwakarma, 28 who was found hanging from a ventilator inside the lock-up at Singtam police station on November 10. A magisterial probe has also been ordered into the death.  Sub-inspector Tseten Bhutia was the officiating duty officer while Surendra Thapa was a non-commissioned officer on duty when the incident took place. Bikram was picked up in connection with a theft case on November 9 and was kept in police custody at the Singtam police station. He was reportedly caught red-handed by members of the taxi association in Singtam while stealing a stereo, sound boxes and some audio cassettes from a vehicle. The youth had been beaten up before being handed over to the police. He was charged under Section 379 of the IPC for theft. Gangtok | Saturday, Nov 10 2007: Tension prevailed in the commercial hub of East Sikkim, Singtam following the custodial 'suicide' of an alleged thief, last evening, police said today. B Vishakarma (25) was arrested by Singtam police after local taxi drivers accused him of stealing car audio systems, DIG (Range) Akshay Sachdeva said. Yesterday, at about 1600 hrs, the accused hanged himself with his own undergarments, inside the lockup's toilet, Mr Sachdeva added. While some locals have alleged torture as being the cause for the custodial death, the DIG ruled out any such foul play. Investigations were being conducted but so far, there has not been any indication of foul play or torture, he stated and added that more information will be available after the post-mortem. SINGTAM, June 6: The Singtam Police has arrested 12 persons in connection with cable theft in the area. Following many complaints lodged by the BSNL with the Police over the regular thefts of optical fibre cable, especially from remote areas, the Police were on the heels of these offenders for a long time. On June 2 morning, the Singtam Police found two persons-Sher Bahadur Subba and Bal Bahadur Tamang of Ralep Busty moving around in a suspicious manner. When the Police checked their bags, they found one Khukuri, one Bamfook, a hexa blade and cables worth Rs. 65,000 in them. Immediately, they were taken to the Singtam Police Station and during interrogation, they revealed that others were also involved in cable theft. Following the lead, the Police arrested Chandu Rai, Passang Tamang, Karan Bahadur Rai, Karna Bahadur Rai, Arun Mangar, Tara Subba, Lal Bahadur Thapa, Gopal Rai, Nim Tshering Tamang, Lakpa Sherpa, Phurba Tamang and Subash Darjee. SINGTAM, May 08 : The Singtam Police on 7 May detained one Ran Bahadur Chettri of Chisopani from a labour camp at the Rani Khola river bank at Singtam. According to the Police, Ran Bahadur Chettri (54), along with his wife and minor daughter had taken shelter in a labour camp at Rani Khola river bank on 6 May evening after coming from Chisopani. The next morning, at around 9 am, Ran Bahadur Chettri reportedly assaulted his wife with a bhamphok on her head inflicting multiple injuries. The victim Sarita Chettri (27) was thereafter rescued and rushed to the nearest PHC wherefrom she was referred to the Central Referral Hospital at Gangtok. During investigation the Singtam Police seized the weapon of offence (bhamphok) and arrested the accused. The couple’s daughter Pavitra Chettri (3) was handed over to the mother of victim. A case was registered under Section 307 of the Indian Penal Code against the attempt to murder and further investigations are on.
