BY PHILIP RAI Recently a woman named Rachel Ellison was awarded an Order of the Member of the British Empire (MBE). She had set up a radio show called Afghan Woman's Hour in Afghanistan under the aegis of British Broadcasting Corporation. She was given the honour for promoting human rights and female empowerment in the country. This piece of news reminded me of a WWII veteran Gurkha, Major Kunjalal Moktan who too had been awarded with an order of MBE. The MBE was given to him in recognition of his efforts at helping the Britishers reconstitute the partition torn Brigade of Gurkhas at Malaya (Malaysia). Albeit, ‘the order has attracted some criticism for its connection with the idea of the British Empire. Kurseong July 13: The authorities of the Bagora Air Force station, who has been intimidated by the police of the mysterious object that fell from the sky on Thursday have not reached the Kurseong police station, so far. As such no verification could be made of the celestial object that fell at Lower Sirubari Busty, near Rohini under the Kurseong Sub division. A police official informed that presently, the object has been kept safely at the Kurseong police station and yesterday, an official letter (requisition) was sent to the Bagora Air Force authorities, following which a team of Bagora Air Force authorities would be visiting the police station, tomorrow to examine the object. Unidentified object falls in Kurseong DARJEELING, July 11: In what may be termed as something straight out of a science fiction, an unidentified flying object has been spotted in Kurseong sub-division of Darjeeling yesterday afternoon. The incident occurred at around 6:30pm at Sisu Bari, near Rohini tea garden. According to the eyewitness, Hari Bahadur Chettri, a red “kadai” shaped object blazing in flames landed in front of his house late yesterday afternoon. The panic-stricken Chettri called his family members and his neighbours. Eyewitnesses said that the object produced tremendous heat. Statesman News Service SILIGURI, Dec. 7: The Gorkha National Liberation Front has resolved to revive the demand for a separate Gorkhaland state in case the Centre failed to clear the Darjeeling Sixth Schedule Bill in the next session of Parliament. The resolution was adopted at the GNLF's branch committee meetings, held simultaneously in Darjeeling, Kurseong, Kalimpong and Mirik today. While the meeting in Darjeeling held was presided over by the branch committee president, Mr Deepak Gurung, at Kurseong, Kalimpong and Mirik the meetings were chaired by Mr Indra Narayan Pradhan, Mr Dawa Pakhrin and Mr LB Rai, respectively. “All the branch committees have unanimously resolved to serve the Centre an ultimatum for it to clear the Bill in the next session of the Parliament, failing which, the GNLF would revive the agitation for a separate Gorkhaland state,” Mr Deepak Gurung said.
