 NEWS FIRST PUBLISHED ON SIKKIM EXPRESS (22/07/08) NEWS BY SHITAL PRADHAN SINGTAM : A medical camp to spread awareness about AIDS was held at Shantinagar, Singtam on July 20. The camp was organized by Navudaya Sangh, a local organization of Shantinagar, Singtam and was sponsored by AIDS Cell from Gangtok. The personage attending the function included members of Navudaya Sangh, the AIDS Cell from Gangtok and the locals of the nearby areas.  The larger section of the assemblage included the girls in their teens. Speakers at the function narrated in detail the preventive measures to be taken, the role of women in the campaign against AIDS, the medical assistance offered to AIDS patients etc. The talk of the programme included different views on AIDS and discussed about the growing drug addiction among youth. This story is some 11 years old and I still have this newspaper cutting from the local newspaper "Sikkim Observer, Sept 19-25,1998". For the first time, I had heard of any quadruplet babies born to Sikkimese parents. Those babies included a boy and three girls born in Siliguri Hospital. I am not so sure what happened to them in later years. The parents Ongden Denzongpa and Phigu Bhutia were from Aritar, Rhenock if I am not wrong.
