Postal envelope showing the Rangpo cancellation of 1909 Last year I read in one of the daily newspapers from Gangtok mentioning the heritage status to be given to the Rangpo Post Office for being the second oldest post office in Sikkim. Truly, it is an appreciating gesture but how correct is it to give the year of establishment as 1927. I rushed through other newspapers that carried the story but I did not find any changes in the year of establishment. Surprisingly, being related to philately I felt I need to provide some input about Sikkim's Postal History. So how about this, I have a scan of postal envelopes with a clear postal cancellation of Rangpo that reads 9 October 1909. Today, Lingtam , a half-hour vehicle road from Rongli Bazaar , is a small, silent wayside village mostly forgotten by history. Today, it is remembered by the tourists for its small Lingtam Police Check Post , where the visitors and their vehicles need to submit their “ Permit Pass " to visit another side of the road to Changu . Towards the end of the 1880s, this place had continuous visitors in the army personnel related to  British Expedition Forces that marched towards Gnathang , the Sikkim-Tibet Border . The development of Sikkim had always evaded this small place for most of the decades. Despite the presence of exotic locales around this effortless landscape, one deserted house just along the way caught my fancied eye when I visited this place for the first time. Very little is known about the postal history of Sikkim. Though post offices in Sikkim started in  1888 in  Dulapchin (now Dalapchand), near Rongli and meager information has been established so far. For a stamp-sized state of Sikkim, 6 th  November 2006 held a moment of glory and recognition in terms of world philately. Indian Postage featured a postal stamp on Changu Lake in a group of five lakes from different parts of India. The Changu Lake stamp with Rs 5 denomination features among the five Himalayan Lakes of India that include Roop Kund, Sela, Tsomo Riri, and Chandra Tal. The stamp and First Day Cover had been designed by Bharati Mirchandani and the Cancellation was designed by Alka Sharma. The stamp is printed in the photogravure process and printed at India Security Press, Nasik. The Post Offices in Sikkim is said to have started around the time when Sikkim Expedition 1888 was undergoing (More information on Sikkim Expedition 1888 shall come in days to come), this cancelled post card send from Sikkim to Bombay could probably be one of the first used postcards to had been officially marked from Sikkim Post Office . STAFF REPORTER Gangtok: The Governor of Sikkim Mr. Sudarshan Agarwal on February 28 inaugurated the Postal finance Mart (PFM) at Gangtok Head Post Office in presence of Major General Mr. KVS Lalthotra, GOC (Black cat Division), Mr. NK Pradhan, Gangtok Area MLA, Mrs. Sashi Salini Kujur, Director for Postal Services, Sikkim, and other personnel of postal services.
