NRT Nepal win 29th All India Governor’s Gold Cup Football Tournament 2007

The 29th All India Governor’s Gold Cup Football Tournament 2007 was concluded on November 7 with an exhilarating final match between the two tough teams of the tournament and the home rivals NRT Nepal and Three Star (Nepal). The Chief Minister Pawan Chamling witnessed the grand final of the tournament as chief guest on the occasion. The two rival teams from Nepal fought against each other from the beginning of the match. In the 19th minute of the match, Niranjan Raimajhi (9) of NRT Nepal scored the opening goal. Fighting back, Three Star’s most promising player Jumanu Rai (11) scored a spectacular equalizer by a sure shot from D-box area in the 32nd minute.

Till the half time of the 90 minutes match, both the teams stuck to 1-1 score. During the interval of the match, the Chief Minister felicitated Chewang Thendup Shangdarpa (41), popularly known as ‘Appey’, with Life Time Achievement Award for his immense contribution in the field of football and Nirmal Chandra Dahal, a student of Sikkim Spastics Society who won gold medal in soft ball throw at Special Olympic in Shanghai, China. 

In the second half of the match, players from both the teams put their best effort to secure another goal for their respective teams. In the 59th minute, Bal Gopal Shaukhal (27) of NRT was successful to score the second goal for his team through a beautiful header. Thereafter, NRT Nepal tightened up their defense giving no chance to Three Star to advance. Thus NRT Nepal won the match by 2-1. After the match, the chief guest Chamling awarded the winning team NRT Nepal the Gold Cup 2007 Trophy and cash award of Rs 1,50,000 (Rs 1 lakh was donated by Dr Chamling). The runners-up team Three Star (Nepal) was given Chiranjilal Khatri Memorial Runners-Up Token Trophy. Besides these two teams, Punjab Police team was felicitated with Adhik Lall Pradhan Memorial Best Disciplined Team trophy. 

In the individual category, Ruk Mani Pradhan Memorial Man of the Tournament trophy was awarded to Basanta Gauchan (8) of NRT Nepal while Anil Gurung (10) from the same team received Uttarayon Best Player of the final match trophy. Jersey number 11 player of NRT Nepal Jumanu Rai was awarded for scoring the highest number of goals (5) in the tournament. The coach of NRT Nepal was visibly jubilant when he said that his boys have truly avenged their team’s defeat against Three Star in the earlier Nepal League 2007. In a cultural programme on the occasion, students from Thumi Sambota Tibetan School performed a ‘Dong’ dance, while girls from Shiva Gram Sewa Samiti of Pani House presented a colorful Tamang Dance and small kids from Sri Sai Prashanti Vidya Mandir School performed a beautiful English dance.
