SPNS to organize Philatelic Workshop at schools

SINGTAM, May 08: Sikkim Philatelic and Numismatic Society held its General Meeting at Rhenock on May 6. The meeting was first for the new year and many important talks on the development of the hobbies in the state were discussed at Ganesh Pradhan, President SPNS’s residence.

Present on the occasion was Anand Yonzone, Director, North Point Academy, and Mrs. Nilema Yonzone both from Darjeeling, along with members of SPNS from Darjeeling, Siliguri, and Sikkim.

Anand Yonzone chaired the meeting that decided to work on different plans for the year 2018. Some important matters included a display of philatelic and numismatic exhibits at different places of Sikkim, philatelic workshops at different schools, membership drives, a celebration of SPNS’s 12th anniversary. Shital Pradhan, Secretary, SPNS was the host of the day. Ganesh Pradhan, President, SPNS gave the welcome speech. On the behalf of SPNS, Pradhan congratulated Roshan Prasad and Vivek Yonzone for their Silver medals at INPEX 17 held at Mumbai. Prasad was also congratulated for his Silver Medal at Dubai Stamp Exhibition.

Vivek Yonzone, a member of SPNS informed that he has initiated an organization at Darjeeling named Alpine Philatelic and Numismatic Society. The said Society will work along with Sikkim Philatelic and Numismatic Society as sister concerned, added Yonzone. He also handed over an invitation letter to Ganesh Pradhan, President, of SPNS to participate and support their first philatelic and numismatic exhibition to be held at Hayden Hall, Darjeeling in June 1 -2, 2018.

Sushil Karthak, President, Alpine Philatelic and Numismatic Society speaking on the occasion thanked SPNS for all the support so far and expected to work together with SPNS. Anand Yonzone, chairperson of the meeting expressed gratitude towards SPNS for the promotion of philately and numismatic beyond geographical boundaries. He added hobbies help an individual with a creative mind and it is good to see philately growing in the Hills. Robin Rai from Dalapchand was welcomed as a new member of the Sikkim Philatelic and Numismatic Society.

Padam Parajuli, member SPNS gave the vote of thanks towards the end of the meeting. Other members to attend the meeting included Deepen Pradhan, Ruben Pradhan, Sumit Gurung.

LENDUP DORJEE KHANGSARPA : The First Chief Minister of Sikkim (1975-1979)

Popularly known as L. D. Kazi, became the first Chief Minister of Sikkim in 1975 thus ending over three century old monarchy system. He became the 1st Chief Minister of Sikkim on 14 MAY, 1975 - 17 AUGUST, 1979. He was born in 1904 in Pakyong, East District. A fonuder President of Sikkim Praja Mandal, established in 1946. Later he became the President of Sikkim State Congress and held the post till 1958. In 4th general election held in 1970, Kazi was appointed an Executive Councilor and was assigned the portfolio of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry and Transport Authority. Under his presidency in 1973, the united party secured 31 out of 32 seats of State Assembly and became the first Chief Minister of Sikkim in 1974. He was married to Elisa-Maria Standford in 1968, daughter of a Belgian father and German mother who left her Scottish husband in Burma and married LD Kaji in Delhi in 1957.
