Sikkim Motor Transport Workers Association Singtam announces major welfare schemes at annual assembly

11.08.26: In a major boost to the local transport community, the Sikkim Motor Transport Workers Association, Singtam, East Sikkim, successfully held its Annual General Assembly today at the Assembly Hall. Presided over by driver member Shri Bhuwan Subba Limbu alongside Association President Shri Upendra Sampang, the assembly unanimously passed 19 landmark resolutions aimed at driver welfare, strict discipline, and institutional growth.

To safeguard drivers and their families against unexpected financial burdens, the Association has officially launched a comprehensive monetary relief scheme designed to provide a vital safety net during health crises, family losses, and major life milestones. The structured fund offers substantial medical support—including up to ₹1,00,000 for kidney transplants, ₹50,000 for out-of-state referrals, and ₹10,000 for non-major illnesses—alongside family welfare benefits such as ₹40,000 in bereavement relief for the family of a deceased active driver and ₹6,000 during a spouse’s hospitalization.

In addition to medical and welfare assistance, the initiative celebrates personal milestones and extends goodwill across the broader driving community. Members will receive celebratory grants of ₹10,000 for their marriage or that of their child, and ₹6,000 upon the birth of a newborn. Demonstrating a broader commitment to driver welfare, the Association has also introduced humanitarian aid of ₹5,000 for non-member drivers facing critical health emergencies, ensuring compassion and immediate financial reassurance when it is needed most.

The Association reaffirmed its commitment to public safety and passenger trust by adopting a strict zero-tolerance policy against substance abuse and drunk driving at vehicle stands. Violators face up to a two-month operational suspension and boycott. Members also reaffirmed full administrative and legal support for drivers involved in untoward road accidents.

Former President Shri Bhuwan Kumar Subba Limbu and Advisor Krishna Chettri was grandly felicitated with a khada, garland, and certificate of appreciation for his outstanding contributions. The assembly officially appointed its new executive office-bearers, naming Shri Bantu Adhikari as Joint Secretary, Shri Nyima Bhutia as Social Secretary, Shri Nim Tshering Tamang as Treasurer, and Shri Ranjan Pradhan as Publicity Secretary.

JANHA BAGCHA TEESTA RANGIT

This was a national song of Sikkim sung in the Nepali language during the monarchy system. During the merger with India, the song got banned and later re-released. Two words on the 8th para, which earlier said 'Rajah rah Rani,' were replaced with "Janmah bhumi."     This song was dedicated to the King and Queen of Sikkim. The song lyrics were penned by Sanu Lama, and the music was composed by Dushyant Lama.  The song was first sung on the birth anniversary of Chogyal Palden Thondup Namgyal on April 4, 1970, at Gangtok by Aruna Lama, Dawa Lama, and Manikamal Chettri.    JANHA BAGCHA TEESTA RANGIT,  JAHAN KANCHENDZONGA SEER   YEHI HO HAMRO DHANA KO DESH,  TAPAWAN HO PYARO SIKKIM     INTERLUDE     PHULCHAN YEHA AANGANAI MAA,  CHAAP , GURAS, SUNAKHARI   SWARGASARI SUNDAR DESH KO  HAMRO PYARO PYARO JANMAHBHUMI     JANHA BAGCHA……     BATASHLE BOKCHAA YAHA,  TATHAGAT KO AAMAR WAANI ...

Rongli my birthplace

BY SHITAL PRADHAN A small hamlet in an eastern side Silent raush on its way, The old silk route, More older it look Upon which I stay, Hey that’s Rongli, Rongli my birthplace Years went by, years dried up, Yet the small village is as it was, Silent, peaceful and introvert Today’s picture of Rongli, Houses as station bogie, Looks a cradle, from Chujachen, Upon which the blue sky, As if I can touch thee, Roaring River, As the legend we hear, Still watch with glee, The terror of 1890 somewhat forgotten, Yet another terrorizing moment, 68 was the year… 1968, When sky too wasn’t pleased. That was Rongli, Rongli of the past. Playing along the Baar-Pepal tree, Hiding in the Shivalaya, Watching videos and aloft Is a decent memory, now? Sweet time in treasure, Yet when I am in Rongli, I am happy, in whither sweet. Rongli my birthplace !
